Senior breaks old record by nearly a foot

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The outstanding efforts of seniors Natalie Duncan (Alexandria, Va.) and Verniece Johnson (Mineral, Va.) have been the highlight of the 2008-2009 Virginia Commonwealth University women’s track & field season.

Last week at the CAA Championships it was Johnson who captured a conference title and broke a school record in the long jump.

This week, it was Duncan’s turn. The veteran thrower etched her name in the VCU record books over the weekend when she heaved the shot put 44’ 10 ¼” at the Penn Relays. The mark bests the old record of 44’ 1 ¼” set by Ashley Rogers in 2007 and placed her eighth in the elite field at the meet.

Duncan wasn’t done, picking up a top-25 finish in the discus as well.

Johnson was also in action, placing in the top-20 in the long jump.

“Overall it wasn’t our best showing, but I’m very happy for Natalie and her accomplishment,” Head Jon Riley said. “Our seniors have been our leaders all year and have really put in a lot of hard work. They set an example of how we want all our athletes to perform.”

The Rams will have a week to focus on final exams before heading to the George Mason Classic on Saturday, May 2nd.

Congrats to Natalie. She is a great athlete for the T&F team, and a good friend. No one deserves it more than her.
