Is it just me or do Zones seem throw this team off?

Last night USF did a 3-2 zone and VCU starts jacking up long threes. It seems as though zones whether its 2-3, 3-2, or whatever it freaks the team out. Hopefully this isn't aftermath of last year's semi final against ODU. Maybe its because they don't do a Zone very much themselves so they don't know it as much.

Whatever is freaking them out about Zones needs to be fixed because we know VCU will face it again when they play ODU(They used a 3-2 on Richmond to come back from 9 points down to win off a 22-5 run at the end of the game).

I honestly thought we did better when USF played zone. When they played man to man, we were jacking up shots like crazy. When they played zone, a few times our guards would penetrate and dish it out to an open 3 (that sadly weren't falling).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but was there a traveling call in that game last night?

I remember one by USF after a defensive rebound.

You bust up a zone by shooting over it or driving through it. Since shooting 3s is a staple our offense, let it fly.

I agree the driving through it part. However, shooting a 3 over a 3-2 zone is very difficult since 3 guys are guarding the perimeter. Now if we were talking about a 2-3 I totally agree about using threes.

I was hoping they would have stayed in zone longer. I thought we did alright against their zone.

bust a zone by driving into it? the key to busting a zone is creating 3on2 or 2on 1 opportunities by passing the ball into the high post ( you can go low post as well) facing the basket for the chance to find a teammate once you have a numerical advantage. You have to get your angles correct and usually have to your 4 or 5 at the elbow receiving the ball from the wing. Moving the ball around the perimeter is usually an attempt to make the zone move in order to open up the angle to penetrate.

1 - take Joey out
2- Run Rozell on the baseline shooting in the corners.
3- Put Brad at the top of the key
4-Veal down low
5- Skeen on the wing
6- Nixon on the wing

Guards drive lane, rotate the baseline, and everyone hits the boards, man at the top of the key stays back(always) dont forget to set strong screens...
