No more of a step up than Martelli, Jr. coming to VCU from Bryant. Martelli, Jr. also brought two players that had to adjust to a higher profile school. New Mexico got a decent coach in the offseason.
yup (might even say Olen's UCSD team was at a slightly higher level than Bryant)
-and Eric Olen has been a head coach for 12 years at San Diego before coming to NM - (7 years at D2 level and successful) 5 years at D1 (first 4 were transitional years where they were ineligible for NCAA tourney and in first year eligible made it to the dance with final NET in mid 30s). Martelli only had 2 years HC experience as we know
at UC San Diego they took great care of the ball and were a very unselfish team that played defense - in that approach the two coaches definitely differ in their philosophies ( while Martelli's approach is more popular with today's athletes I readily agree you can win with many different approaches at the college level)
would imagine that will be lot of their DNA at NM when he gets his type of players and the time to get their buy-ins
the one guy (howell) that starts that followed him plays 25ish minutes and is their leading assist man with an assist to turnover ratio of 32/13 or 2.46 to 1, (no one at VCU that plays has one above 2, Evans our leader has a 1.77 ratio) as well as Howell averaging around 5 points a game while shooting a robust 8% from 3 pt land. ) (1-13)
other UCSD guy that followed him plays around 6 minutes a game. (which likely means he played double digit minutes in blow out games and limited to none in most other competitive games at NM (sort of like Mitchell to date though with Fermin absence and Lazar's tendency to be injured, Keyshawn has a new role with added minutes)
go rams and go "telli"
Personally I think the level of transfer martelli got maybe a little better than what Olen was able to do - Martelli was hired maybe one week before Olen was hired if my memory has not been too much damaged
supposedly NM spends similar revenue share dollars with basketball that VCU does (but until we see real reports on spending we must rely upon the school's assertions)
