Eric Maynor is Virginia Commonwealth's all-time leader in points and assists, a once-in-a-decade type of Colonial Athletic Association guard who led the Rams to three consecutive regular-season titles, two NCAA tournament appearances and that etched-in-our-memory victory over Duke in 2007.

Now he's gone, off to the NBA as a possible lottery pick. Which means Anthony Grant picked a nice time to leave VCU for Alabama, because trying to keep things going at their current pace sans the best player in school history is never a simple task, particularly in a competitive, (sometimes) one-bid league.

"But the fans don't care about that," said first-year VCU coach Shaka Smart. "Their deal is, 'Hey, this guy before you was winning, and we brought you in here to do the same or more.'"

Or else.

That's a good idea for a suggestion for RamNation - sneak a remote controlled camera into the practice facility (I guess they still use the "new" gym on Franklin Street. Do they still have the offices with full window view on the 2nd level in the West end of the gym? Plant the camera up there or whereever is best for a full view and just broadcast 24 hours a day, what a feed that would be.

I don't have the expectations the first year because of how late he got into the recruiting, but seeing how his recruiting this late went this year. They will be very high in his second campaign.

I'd even go as far as to say that Shaka did a better job of recruiting(2009 class) in a month, than Anthony Greed did the entire year.

I would take Theus and/or Daniels over Eblen 100% of the time.

Oh me too, the only thing Anthony brought in was Larry. His second best player is no longer in the program and several of his players have transferred or almost transferred. I can't wait until his second recruiting class.

AG brought in some very good players in my opinion....

Larry (NBA Bound)
Brandan (gonna have a break out year, watch for him to run the point with Joey)
Joey (more important to team than most people think)
Braford (gonna be all CAA soon)
Kirill (only getting better)

However, he wasn't as good a recruiter as Capel, and I feel Smart will do much better..

Smart has recruited very well in one month, and dont forget, he kept the team in tact. Ndongo left because hes on the academic tract, I think hes so smart, he used basketball to get a quality education to further pursue his life's goals. Not many college basketball players do that. I wish Ndongo the best...

AG was responsible for Skeen and Gavin as well. I think these guys will produce. Nixon's offense isnt there, but he could really give us a boost with good defense...

I don't know how anyone can say Daniels or Theus will be better for us than Eblen would. Time will tell w/that situation. Also, in regard to Grant and recruiting, until he left he was the recruiting godsend. He picks up and leaves and all of the sudden he only brought in Sanders. When you have 6 players in a recruiting class chances are a couple are not going to last. I think the guys we have now have a ton of potential and we have not seen a team this deep in some time. Yes, we have question mark at point guard, but I think Grant did some darn fine recruiting in his 3 years w/us. All in all we only really got 2 classes out of him, and our future is pretty bright w/just those 2 classes. Think of last years class...Santil, Burgess, Gavin and Skeen. That could likely be 3 all CAA performers if not next year the year after.
There is nothing wrong w/being excited, but be realistic as well. I dont doubt Smart's abilities, but I will never discount what Grant did for us and set him up with.

Depending on Coach Smarts style of play it will determine whether or not we have a succesful campaign. We still have some major pieces in place to continue from where we left off. I do agree that we appear to be deep on paper. Hopefully the new aquisitions will be productive. Smart seems to have picked up a good supporting cast in terms of coaching...He is young and should be able to relate well with the team. He has stated that he wants to wreak havoc witch tells me that he want to play a up tempo style game .With the type of atheletes we have I am excited about the upcoming season. I think Grant did a excellent job....but I believe the best is yet to come for VCU Basketball. :ugeek: :ugeek: :ugeek:
