For Funsies: Conference Reallignment/Creation

Reducing Football scholarships is not a bad thing for them in today’s landscape

It's a bit of a shame considering how unbelievably weak the Patriot League is.

It does lead to really stupid takes like this one though (screenshot since I expect this guy to block me):

You do realize that Delaware is also leaving the CAA to join C-USA as they move up to the FBS football level. The CAA is becoming a garbage football league. Just take a look at who their members will be going forward.

Just a matter of time before Westhampton moves all their sports over to the Patriot League. I mean it makes sense for them with their high academic standards.

Wishful thinking. Mooney is deep into the NIL sweepstakes. That doesn't happen at a school looking to move down to the Patriot League in all sports.

That is true, but they were still ranked fairly highly in ELO even after JMU left, and Delaware finished 4th in the league last season.

Now, if Villanova and W&M do leave, that changes everything.

Speaks to the brain dead leadership of the CAA. A lot of head scratching additions dating back to our time in the league, randomly changing the name. Presumably other teams are probably out the door as well (though maybe this is UR just dipping a toe in getting rid of football altogether) but if you’re leaving why not go SoCon instead?

Except that Mason is higher in the USA News and World Report rankings than. UR at 1/4 the tuition cost.

W&M have a big role in the identity of the league is a frightening thought. A basketball program that hasn't won anything since 1893 and a football program with one bowl win since 1893. That is a frightening identity for sure.

They might be the flagship program in football now, but no way they are the flagship program in basketball. That probably goes to Charleston, with UNCW a close second.

I daydream that the Pac 2 will use their unique opportunity to start a Best-Of for both football and basketball eff 07/01/2026. The football is not separated as most no longer use divisions.

Split 10 and 10, with divisional play only until conference tournaments with the exception of football and basketball so that after five years, the East can break away for its own non-football league (18 games double round robin) with the gridiron schools retaining football only membership:

Football only: Air Force, Army, Navy.

East: Temple, VCU, CofC, South Florida, Tulane, UTSA, Memphis, Wichita State, St. Louis, Dayton

West: Washington State, Oregon State, Gonzaga, Fresno State, San Diego State, UNLV, Boise State, Wyoming, Colorado State, New Mexico (nice hoops school you guys added for a series, btw)

Five eastern non-football schools would provide you guys with the nucleus and strength to begin a reset (if necessary) if most/all football schools left --- Loyola Chicago, Rhode Island, Drake, Indiana State, Belmont, Murray State, etc.

Can VCU move to the West in your scenario?

Haha ... only after Memphis does as well. 😀

I am crossing my fingers that if the unlikely scenario fails, that we can leave leave for the Pac2/MWC remnants along with three from the current AAC.

So much so, that if offered just football only, I would be happy to accept that and then park other sports in the A-10 along with Wichita State.

Joining a league with Oregon State, Washington State, and trimmed MWC appeals to me in both football and basketball.
