For Funsies: Conference Reallignment/Creation

La Salle does not field a team but is bringing the sport back in time for the 2026 season. I'd also be surprised if the A-10 even had an at large bid in the past 20 years.

Interesting...I've been punching on LaSalle for years for their ridiculous inability to run a successful University athletics program. They cut a ton of sports a couple years ago....baseball included for "sustainability" reasons

I looked into it, and baseball is returning....and joining Women's rugby, Women's Acrobatics and Tumbling, and Women's Triathlon...all new programs/team......oh LaSalle, just leave the A10 already...yeeeesh

LaSalle's Hank Devincent Field

Yes, that is a dual purpose baseball/soccer field with synthetic turf

I can't even with these people......

isn't there a softball field across the street from the Ashe Center.
LOL My son turned his ankle there one year playing baseball in a MJBL tournament. It was a bad field then, would be scared to see the condition of it now.

What???!

First no swimming.

Now VCU doesn't have women's softball, lax??!!

Next you are going to tell me vcu doesn't have gymnastics and wrestling...

How can VCU be a flagship without women's softball and LAX??

That's like going to a hot dog vendor, buying a foot long and vendor says he/she has no mustard or relish...
Or Pineapple! Still trying to earn my H-Dog Mr. X

While LaSalle adding more sports may at first blush look to be a good sign, the opposite may in fact be the case. LaSalle appears to be following the model several D3 schools have used in recent years to increase full time enrollment. They have added more sports. At the D3 level, there are no athletic scholarships and low operations costs. The thinking is the money received from enrolling the athletes for these teams more than offsets any new costs.

I unfortunately suspect that the sports LaSalle will be adding will not be well funded. Their main purpose will not be to win nor even to give students the opportunity to compete in sports they love. The addition of these sports programs will instead be primarily to increase full time undergraduate enrollment.

Here is some recent news (April 17, 2024) on the general status of LaSalle the school:

La Salle University’s enrollment has dropped 28% since 2019 in overall headcount. And the loss of full-time undergraduate enrollment is even worse, plummeting by 46.5%, to 1,705 in 2023-24. In that same time period, applications also have fallen, and only one in every 10 students accepted enrolls. And La Salle’s core operating loss ballooned from $1.4 million in 2019 to $11.3 million last year, while its operating revenue fell to $92 million from $115 million over the same period.

There is, but it's not exactly a college-level facility. You can get a nice view if you sit on the dumpsters behind center field, though.
I don’t know about adding any more sports, but I do wish the athletic could include the field hockey and lacrosse. Since my undergraduate days at VCU I have always thought having any sports on the Cary Street field was odd for a D1 school.

The Cary Street Field is way better now than it was back before they renovated the gym. I kind of wish it had more seating, but at the same time the only people who typically go to the games are family and friends (which is awful because I really enjoy watching field hockey and lacrosse).

A-10 to add UMass & Delaware as associate members in men's lacrosse.

(wish we were joining too!!!)

Makes sense as neither C-USA nor the MAC sponsor men's lacrosse (C-USA doesn't sponsor lacrosse at all). But yeah, it'd be nice to have a men's lacrosse team.
