For Funsies: Conference Reallignment/Creation

I hope those left behind by the Pac get every cent possible. All this to leave 3-4 schools behind.
I totally agree. The Pac-2 should have just merged with the Mountain West - it probably would have been enough to make it a power conference. Instead they're poaching to survive, even though they no longer have power status themselves.

The PAC-12 can't merge with the MWC, or any other conference until 2026 due to the settlement agreement with the departing schools. If they merge sooner, then all PAC-12 assets are evenly distributed to all PAC-12 schools, including the departing schools. Also there are 6 years of NCAA Tournament units that are still on the table for the PAC-12. There are dozens of units still with the PAC-12, with each unit worth approximately $2 million. If the PAC-12 ceases to exist, the NCAA could very well terminate any remaining units in the pipeline.

This situation is not nearly as clear cut as many of you think it is. There is a ton of future PAC-12 revenue on the table that goes well beyond 2026.

I lived in New Mexico for a few years and became a big Lobos fan. Wish I could be out there for the game in December at the Pit.

The Pit is the coolest college arena I've ever been to in my life (sorry Stu). They pack the PIT and it's electric in there. Pac-12 not wanting New Mexico because their football team stinks is disappointing as I'm sure the program will be turned around under Bronco. I hope the MW teams get ALL the money.

To think my antitrust law professor years ago lamented that this area of law was dead.

He was wrong. Many of us who were in higher ed/ athletic law in the late 2000s/2010s saw this as the natural and probable outcome. Many were trying to warn their institutions that some of these things would end up with antitrust cases.

Did not have Texas State being the Belle of the Ball on my 2024 bingo card.

Gotta have some teams that are going to fill out the bottom of the conference.

If the ACC ever do start to lose teams....especially UVA, I wonder if the ACC would decide to stick with a Virginia team and send JMU an invite. They have always had a pretty strong football team wherever they have been. It would make me sick to my stomach considering their bball team was a 2 decade long toilet whisk and don't deserve any ACC attention. But then the great basketball conference that was once the ACC is now all about football and the breakup of the ACC will also be all about football and any new invites will likely also be about football.

If the acc ever reached the point of needing to add jmu it would be in a pac2 situation where its only remaining asset was the name.

Texas State isn't really all that bad football-wise. In basketball, on the other hand, they're hot garbage.

As much as it pains me to say it, I disagree. JMU clearly has an ACC-level football team (as evidenced by the beatdown they gave UNC) and their basketball team has the feel of a rising program ... not just a one-hit wonder.
