Former Rams Head Coach Dana Kirk has died.

A few thoughts on Coach Kirk:

* As a student at Marshall University, he held the distinction of being the starting center on both the basketball and football teams. He was head coach at Tampa and then a Denny Crum assistant at Louisville, '71-'76.

* At VCU, he inherited Ren Watson and Gerald Henderson, but then had to "re-recruit" them; both were nearly out the door when he arrived following the stunning resignation of Chuck Noe in October, '77.

* His first recruiting class was Ed Sherod (John Marshall), Danny Kottak (Louisivlle) and Penny Elliott (Clearwater, Fla.); he later landed Monty Knight (TJ), Kenny Stancell (Frederick Military) and Greg McCray (Hopewell by way of Florida JC).

* The leisure suits (with wide open collar over lapel) he preferred were the fad at this time. Anyone remember Tony Manero (John Travolta) in Saturday Night Fever? In the tournament at U.Va., Virginia trainer Joe Gieck made the mistake of saying, "Where'd ya get that suit, Dana, K-Mart?" Fortunatley Terry Holland intervened. Dana (probably 6-5, 230, and with a mean streak) would have snapped Joe Gieck like a dry twig.

* VCU still played some games at Franklin Street upon his arrival. During his tenure, the Rams went 5-0 vs. UR in '78 and '79; renewed the series with ODU; won at Cincinnati, ECU, W&M and Navy, and had the ECAC victory over Georgetown. The toughest losses were to ODU (OT, on ref John Moreau's "five second" call, resulting in no postseason), to Virginia Tech in the TDIT, and to St. Bonny (a game that denied the Rams an NCAA bid)

* In the NIT loss at Detroit, Dick Vitale was not the Titans' coach. He had stepped down earlier in the season and was watching the game from the bleachers.

* Among the supporters, Coach Kirk was warm and engaging - easily the most approachable of any of the VCU coaches, all-time. He'll be remembered as the coach who took a program on the brink and lifted it to a higher level. Coach Kirk was a great Ram.

That was a good tribute Big Horn. I think he got his suits at S & K. He once said that Monty Knight was so quick, he could open a refrigerator door before the light came on.

I just talked with Justin in the ticket office. He had just read on RamNation that Dana had died. I asked him if we could have a moment of silent prayer for Dana. He said he thought it could be done. I certainly hope so.

My guess is that some of the newer fans don't have an interest in the history of this program, but I get a huge kick out of hearing about the players, coaches and games from years ago, as well as our fans recollection of these individuals and occurances.

I dunno why all you old farts assume things like this about all of us young guys! Actually, I'm pretty quickly moving into the old fart category myself.
Anyway, I know I pay attention to the past a little more than most of the younger generation of fans, but I think part of the big reason that we as a whole don't seem to care is because there really isn't much out there about our past history. We have a few things on the upper concourse of the Siegel Center and of course a few banners, but beyond that there really isn't much there to educate the students and younger fans about VCU's past. I really hope they are able to put together some sort of video montage in honor of Coach Kirk to show during tonights game, and maybe they should do that on a regular basis - show a video of some sort of past accomplishment maybe at halftime of each of the home games so people can learn about what we have achieved prior to their time following VCU basketball!

Yeah, there is no history book on VCU basketball, but it is fun to learn things in bits and pieces through various accounts. Another great thing about VCURamNation.

I just couldn't let that first post of the page stay as the only post on a new page

Thanks for this 'horn, and also to the others helping to tell the history of the Rams. It isn't just the newer crop of Rams fans that might need the history lesson ...I think a lot of us "middle children" (of the Polio/Sonny/Mac years :| ) also haven't had nearly enough exposure to the history of the program... of course, some of the blame for that is the program's for hiding the ball. I truly wish that the school would undertake a project to get a good history documented, and take advantage of the breadth and depth of the institutional memory of Ram fandom.

Bighorn:

Thanks for the great info. I very much also remember Coach Dana Kirk - we definately had some awesome teams under his leadership. I recall the NIT game - if I recall correctly, the former coach of Marquette Al Mcguire was an announcer and he was giving Ren a hard time for not blocking out and such.

I also recall being saddened by Coach Dana Kirk's departure and remembering quite well JD Barnett being named the new coach. There was a sportscaster on channel 12 (Jim Granger) who did an opinion piece each week and he said that it was great that VCU could finally hire a coach and not an Assistant coach...although it sure has worked out well in our history.

My buddy at work remembers seeing Dana at the Burger King on Grace street with the plaid pants on..

RIP Coach Kirk.

That was the second round NCAA game against Tennessee that we lost in OT. And the subject of Maguire's wrath was Kenny Stancell, who I believe went scoreless.

Strange comment. They are winning now. The last time I looked, they were 18-7. Where have you been JacksonWard? :?

I'm thinkin' he sold his tickets tonight for 3 Bud Lights. Pity.

Bighorn, I found your post to be enormously compelling, informative and entertaining. While I couldn't afford to stake you to writing a history of this program, I certainly would pay good money to buy it and read it. I thank you, sir.
