Former Recruits and Players

I just find it crazy that Va Tech paid that much to get him. Their roster is not something that stands out especially in the ACC.
Their entire basketball NIL budget is supposedly $1.5M which is near the bottom of all P4. They went all in on football. I think the $1.5M is yearly budget though so not sure how that works

Football must devour NIL $ for programs in power conferences and has to hinder other sports.

From the "former players" subject, does anyone know if current Mets' reliever Reed Garrett (78 Ks in 63 innings) is grandson of former Ram Reed Garrett, who played for VCU in 69-70 following All-State career at Hermitage High? The younger Reed Garrett played at Mills Godwin High and VMI before entering the pro ranks. The much elder Reed Garrett averaged at least 25 points per game as Hermitage senior ... and played against Maggie Walker (with Jesse Dark) at Richmond Arena is what was THE or nearly first game in area pitting a segregated Black school vs. a traditional white school.

I'm pretty sure he is.

I couldn't tell you.... if hes related to the Basketball player Reed Garrett. Looking at his info thing on VMI's Baseball link from 2013-14... it only mentions hes the son of Bobby & Barb Garrett.

Saw that, too ... but could he have been named after his athletic grandfather? That's not rare. And keep in mind, Godwin is in Henrico West End not that far from Hermitage .... and with a much, much stronger baseball program.

I guess in mileage it is not far but it is another world. Ha! My son is a senior a Godwin. Look for his friend Luke Smyers to be in the mix for state POY. He is a lefty pitcher that brings the heat. He committed to Alabama when he was a sophomore. Another of my son's friends....Hank is coming to VCU.

I have to agree. Va Tech football must make crazy money. If Tobi was the missing piece for a potential National Championship, yes regardless of his overall game.

However, this ain’t that. Maybe they see him as a missing piece that keeps them and their season out of the crapper for a couple of years until they can rebuild. Similar to Iowa State and HWard.

If that number is accurate we are screwed. I loved watching him play but he wasn't even a starter here. Where is all that money coming from? If we offered him anything close to that where are we getting it from?

ACC TV and football money plus big donor money.

how much was it? I must've missed the #.

You also gotta factor in the coaching connection.... and maybe in their minds they think there's potential that was never unlocked at VCU. Maybe they think they can utilize him better than MR or RO did.

Remember Hason Ward? How much money did he get from Iowa State.... And while sure he had a few games with us where he looked really good on both ends.... there were also games he looked invisible on the court cause people were getting by him easily.

Was he worth the amount of money that was reported that Iowa State offered him? Thats up for debate.....

P4's are always gonna toss around big $$$ to get players they think are great players & can perform at a P4/5 level and/or have NBA potential..... its up to the player tho to take those next steps.

Could Tobi show up & play well in the ACC? It's possible.... but it aint gonna happen over night.... and hes gonna have to develop his game.... A LOT.

I listen to Virginia Tech recruiting and some insiders over there said VT paid Lawal $435k to come. Said we offered him $250k to stay and he turned down much bigger offers at other schools to go to VT.
@RowdyPkunk this is the post I was referencing in my comments. Obviously we have no way of knowing if any of these numbers that are thrown out are accurate or not.
