Former Recruits and Players

wasn’t rhoades the one harping on letting kids play?
Not sure why all of you all get butt puckered every time something happens at Happy Valley. This is only a small symptom of a very much larger insidious problem. There is a reason all these P4 programs are refusing to play in the NIT. They are saying, you will not give you our media markets and money that comes with them for your NIT.
P4's are saying, If you want our large media market, then it will only be for the Big Dance. It is designed to erode at-large and autobids from non-P4 programs for the Dance. They are all saying, you can take the High Point University media market but you are not going to get our media market.......those are big media dollars the NCAA/NIT is not going to get. That will reduce total revenue that the NCAA/NIT take in. And money talks.
There is a reason you are not seeing many P4 teams in the NIT. I think this is a concerted effort by the P4 conferences as a group to pressure the NCAA to not only reduce non-P4 at-large bids but also to force a reduction in the number of autobids given to non-P4 conferences. It is forcing a FBS vs FCS type of separation or the college football playoff system where the likelihood of a non-major getting the opportunity to play in it is almost nil.
There is a reason the NIT is mostly filled with non-P4 programs and the NCAA is packed with P4 programs with almost no non-P4 at-large (I think 4 total) and only autobids. It is only going to get worse and hamper our ability to retain good coaches and get a chance at the dance by winning the A10 tournament each year because that is about the only way we are ever going to get into the dance.
300 programs ought to be livid at how the 60 or so majors are hurting college programs

I think tournament expansion is on their radar as well. "oh you don't like only getting 4 MM in as at-large bids? Well let's bump it to 76 teams" More teams, more games, more tv slots, more money. Forcing an unpopular idea by making a series of unpopular decisions until the original idea doesn't seem so bad.

How did we immediately improve? In Mikes last year we went 27-8, 15-3 in conference, were first in the conference and went to the Big Dance. And we had a very experienced team that likely would have all or mostly returned.
I'm not saying that Odom is not good......we have a fantastic team this year with a terrific record and some of the best team play I have seen from VCU. But we were not immediately improved the year after MR left. Also in MR 2nd year here we were 1st in the A10, 16-2 in conference with a 25-8 record......eerily similar to where we are today.
Don't try and change history. The record book does not lie.
There were a lot of rumblings about key players leaving before Rhoades took the Penn State job.

As someone who has enjoyed looking at stats dating back to my days in HS where I kept stats for my HS sports teams, and obviously I've had my Stats threads on this board for years.... Let me be the first to say..... The Record book may not lie.... stats may not lie... but they also may not tell the whole story either.

There are things that are not recorded in a stat sheet or a record book, that you only see by watching games.

You can't necessarily tell if the team has good chemistry by looking at a stat sheet. You can't necessarily tell if the coach is good at making adjustments by looking at a stat sheet. You can't tell if the players respect/trust the coach, or the coach respects/trusts the players by looking at a stat sheet. You can't tell who the leader of the team is necessarily by looking at a stat sheet.

You gotta look at the whole picture.

Also one thing Odom did in year 2, that MR didn't do until year 6..... win an A10 tournament. Just saying.

AND.... unlike Mike Rhoades who chose not to play in a postseason tournament in year 1 at VCU.... Ryan Odom chose to play in the postseason tournament even though it wasn't the NCAA Tournament. He said something along the lines of "If there's an opportunity to play, I'm taking it"... to give the team more games & more time to build their chemistry with one another (those who returned anyway). And well we made it to the Round of 8 in the NIT. Remember, Shaka did similar in his first year (Albeit the CBI).... gave the team more time to gel & what happened the next season... Boom Final 4.

Not saying Odom is taking us to the Final 4 this year.... who knows how far we go, or if we go 1 & done... who knows.

Sometimes you gotta go beyond the box score & look at the bigger picture to understand someones comments.

As a side note, we were watching McNeese St. in their conference title game and my wife said "That's Will Wade? He really put on some weight. I guess he isn't running that grueling mile each day anymore?"

I got picked by a good one! She makes me chuckle.

NC State fans will likely cause him to both lose weight and make his hair gray.
