Former Recruits and Players

Rhoades is proving once again that, as a head coach, using VCU as a launch pad can make you a lot of money, but it rarely leads to success. Odom may prove to be the exception to the rule. You could say Wade is also an exception, but I think it remains to be seen how he does at NCSU. He did well at LSU, but then got suspended. I count that as "not successful".

Wade's tenure at McNeese was very successful. I know you mean when they go up but his run there was fruitful

I think that Odom will have more success at his next job following VCU but this is also his 4th D1 head coaching gig so that experience helps. One could also argue that he is a better fit at UVA than he was at VCU. I don't think that could be said for any of the others that left.

Yeah, he was desperate to get out of Utah and the timing worked. If we'd been in the market a couple years earlier and he came straight here it might be a better comparison.

100% true for everyone except maybe Will Wade. LSU is a pretty good landing spot. They're a football school, but they do care about basketball, unlike Penn State, Texas, etc.

True, but (as you acknowledged) he didn't leave VCU for McNeese. You could say Shaka found his spot in Marquette as well, but he didn't leave VCU for there. All of the coaches who left VCU years ago finally found their landing spot, but all of them (so far ... maybe not Odom) had to fail first after leaving us.

Just an FYI: Wade was thriving at LSU before the Feds came after him.

Odom's stop at VCU was long enough to catch his connecting flight to UVA. The same could also be said regarding Anthony Grant in his efforts to get back to the SEC. Time will tell regarding Odom at UVA, especially with the transfer portal and NIL being at the forefront. Coaches today don't have the job security they had 10 years ago.

Every VCU head coach from Chuck Noe up until Odom either failed at VCU or after leaving VCU, including Shaka at Texas.

Yeah, I guess in Wade's case it was more like "too much too soon" rather than a bad fit. LSU would have been on board with everything he did if he wasn't so sloppy about it. He wanted to hit the ground running though.

If he had of been coaching the LSU football team, he never would have been caught.

LSU certainly wouldn't have distanced themselves from him as quickly as they did but I don't know that he wouldn't have gotten caught with the feds being involved.

Did Dana Kirk fail? Personal failure Yes but was very successful on the court at Memphis State his next job including taking a team to the Final 4. ( year big east had the other 3 spots)
