Freddie Jackson is an under the radar 6'3 point guard whose only offer is from VCU. Dave Telep just saw him at the North Carolina Eastern Regionals playing against another Ram target in Chris Wilson (Terry Sanford)and is raving about his game. Jackson scored 18 points and dished out 10 assists in his matchup with Wilson. In his junior season, Jackson has averaged 14.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 7.7 assists a game. He was subsequently invited Dave Telep's Carolina Challenge where he went against some of the best players in North Carolina and acquited himself very well.

“The best thing about Freddie Jackson is that he is a late bloomer,” Telep said. “He has developed at his own rate without any outside influences."

“As a basketball player, I really like his feel for the game, and the best thing he does is his mid-range game and his ability to pass the basketball. I was so happy he came up to the Carolina Challenge and got to play against the best guys in our state, see what it was like and show how good of a player he is.”

“Talking with his high school coach, Freddie really started to accept a bigger role as the year went on and really started to grow into the role of being the best player on the team,” Telep said.

“The other thing is location. I remember driving home from the East Regional thanking God that I saw Freddie Jackson that day and really kicking myself that I didn't know much about him before then.”

Jackson is arguably the area's top college prospect.

excellent news. in other news from the carolina challenge was another kid with a vcu offer stole the show at least early on saturday in tyler lewis a '12 recruit.

He isn't exactly under-the-radar. Everyone on the East Coast knows who Tyler Lewis is. He's one of the top floor generals in the 2012 class.

maybe he can also sing with the Peppas at half time

i dont think i said he lewis was under the radar. ;)

It's hard to steal the show when everybody knows you're good.

Jackson did because no one knew who he was until this past weekend.

It now appears we have four offers out to 2011 PG's:

1) Freddie Jackson
2)Shane Larkin http://hsflorida.scout.com/a.z?s=376&p=8&c=1&nid=4430183
3)Chris Wilson http://hsflorida.scout.com/a.z?s=376&p=8&c=1&nid=4217058
4)Anthony Stitt http://hsflorida.scout.com/a.z?s=376&p=8&c=1&nid=3575008

They all look good based on recruiting services. Does anyone know if we're targeting one over another, or if one is leaning toward VCU more than another? It certainly seems we are focused on signing a PG, which makes sense.

DB, I saw that article earlier and decided not to post it in fear of inciting the "he's only a one star recruit" crew.

Don't let 'em scare you. I think the vast majority of us would like to know the deal with our recruiting no matter how high or low the recruit is rated. Eric Maynor was a lowly 2-star that probably didn't get anyone too excited at first, and we all know how that turned out.

Don't look now, but Telep has a 3-star recruit. The "he's only a one-star recruit'" crew should be fine with him now.

This kid would be a great fit for our program. Sounds a lot like Eric did coming out of high school and if he's half the player Eric was for us, he's going to be solid. With Joey, Ed, and Brandon leaving in the backcourt after next year, we'll be going after a PG, combo , and 2-guard for 2011 to replace them. While Theus should be ready to take the reins by then, we'll need a solid point to back him up if Issiah still isn't ready at that point. The energy brothers are tough to replace but I'm confident our staff can find and recruit similar talent for us as they've proven is the case so far (I would argue they upgraded the frontcourt talent as far as TJ and Kirill with the obvious exception being Larry who can't really be replaced).

We are looking at a number of guards for 2011 and if we land some of the guys we have been targeting, VCU is going to be very, very good for awhile.

ESPN has a profile up on him now but hasn't seen him play yet so he gets the arbitrary '40' grade that all unevaluated players get. He's a heck of a floor general and one of the most underrated guards in the state of North Carolina although Dave Telep is on to him now. This kid has SERIOUS game and let's hope we can lock him down soon. He is someone we REALLY want.

Hey someone knew Jackson was good. If he wasn't, he would never have been invited. As to the star system, who gives a darn. We need kids who fit the system. One star, two star, or no star. If the kid is athletic and has good size we can teach him the rest.

As stated, two of our best guys were lowly rated. (Larry, Eric) Remember Shu, Jesse, BA, Bradford Burgess all were given a two star or less at some point. However, all performed admirably.

Larry, and Eric are anomalies with regards to being NBA ready. However, we have had plenty of guys who have performed excellently who probably weren't rated very high.

Ratings are cool but not the final word. The kids still has to do it on the court.

No one knew about him except that Telep came to watch Chris Wilson and saw Freddie Jackson go toe-to-toe with him. That was a revelation and he invited him the next week for the Challenge. Literally no one knew who he was going into it and he's still very under-the-radar.

As for the rest of the post, that's not new information lol. I think everyone knows that rankings are nice but ultimately mean nothing. You're preaching to the choir.

Were we on him before the Telep challenge? Having Shaka as the keynote speaker at that event can't hurt your chances. Great exposure for VCU to these promising recruits.

Yes we were the first one to offer. We knew about him before Benny Moss at UNCW and the kid plays in the same area. Pretty astonishing actually.
