Freshman Eric Maynor

My thoughts exactly. And I believe that team only won 19 games and got bumped in the 2nd round of the tournament.

Another irony was they referenced VCU blowing a 17 pt lead to Mason in the previous game...at home!!!

Man I miss those days. Maynor, BA, JPR, Nick, and Shuler all on one team.

And we have more talent now. :?

The big thing that team was missing was ANY quality post player. You can call Nick a post all you want but he wasn't. Our frontcourt then was Eric Davis, Renardo Dixon, Sam Faulk, and the best one of the group Mike Anderson. Tough to make a tourney run with those guys :?. I'm sure we would all agree that Larry, Terrance, Jaime, Kirill, and TJ are much more talented.

Outscored 41 to 12 in the final 11 min!

Maybe Capel didn't quit, maybe everyone on the message board got together and fired him after that.

Thanks for posting the videos though, great stuff. Pretty cool to hear Jerry Punch call a basketball game too.

Theus strikes me as a much more tenacious defender than Eric was at this stage of the game.

It will be hard for anyone to out Maynor Maynor, but Theus can certainly make a name for himself with Maynor style moves on offense and in your face D. Eric would lay down on D at times, of course he was playing much more as well, so you can only do so much. I think Theus will come along nicely. He is already showing promise on D as you stated, and is getting better about turning over the ball although he is not there yet. It would be nice to see him get his teammates involved a little more, but that comes in time once you get use to being on the floor with the same group.

I think we all WANT Theus to be maynor, we all want to make the comparisons, but you just can't yet. Even as a sophomore people questioned maynor. He had some real rough shooting games but once he hit that shot all the speculation was over. He knew he could and would carry us if needed. He would put us one his back and WIN. Until Theus does that I think there is not much comparison.

The big differences:

1) look at the freshman assist numbers.
2) remember Maynor made a HUGE jump between his freshman and sophomore seasons.

Honestly, we shouldn't even compare the two. Lets not make Theus the next Maynor, let him be his own man. This is where the whole "expectations" thing can cause problems.

At a pre-season get together, one of the coaches indicated he felt Darius was our best on-ball defender. I saw a couple of drills where they had guys guarding one-on-one and Darius was a beast. I think it's a point of pride for him.

Yes, it is kind of unfair to Darius, although flattering at the same time. Mostly brought on by the fact that we just lost Eric and Darius's look and mannerisms are so Maynor like at times. Like I said though, Darius might not be as great on offense as Eric (no one else in VCU history was), but he can do a lot on D to go along with that offense. It helps to make comparisons to former VCU players when discussing a particular player's style, but it has to stop at a style comparison rather than an expectation of future results.

I agree about the futility of trying to side-by-side compare the two with stats... they had different systems to work within, different supporting casts, their work was done against differing strength-of-schedules both in and out of conference ...trying to use comparisons of stats removed from all those layers of context seems like trying to paint a landscpae by looking through a drinking straw

the more subjective look and feel kind of comparison is, strangely enough, probably better for this kind of thing... although it too is subject to over thin-slicing, plus memory has a tendency of adding extra warp to the mirror

Ram Eric Maynor was Ram Eric Maynor.... Ram Darius Theus is, will continue to be, and will further develop as Ram Darius Theus
