G.J. Vilarino commits to Gonzaga

guess we're not the "gonzaga of the east" just yet

No, no we're not. We should also realize that every other decent mid-major on the east coast thinks they are working towards that position. There are plenty of other programs that are further along to that goal of being the Gonzaga of the East than we are. Shaka has to take us to the next level. We are nowhere close to being the "Gonzaga of the East". In fact I don't care very much for the term really. We have a long way to go to be mentioned on the same level as them, let's be VCU and do the best we can.

Natty, if he's as good as we think and he's going to be making a lot of money in 4 years, it wouldn't have mattered where he would have gone. Let's not kidd ourselves, there are just as many, if not more NBA scouts going to Gonzaga games every year. He will be playing on a larger stage at Gonzaga. If he thinks he can do it, you can't blame him for trying to go to the best program possible. Any neutral observer would pick Zaga over VCU too. While it doesn't do anything for us, we will survive and hopefully continue our successful ways. It would have been easier with G.J., but alas it was not to be.

I see Zaga's place on the college basketball pyramid, you would just think GJ would prefer playing right away

who else are we going after besides the turkish dude?

He probably thinks he can. I've met few basketball players (myself included for that matter) who don't think they can hack it wherever they go. G.J. is used to being successful, heck he committed to Kentucky his sophomore season! Whether he has fallen off or not, he thinks he can get solid minutes at Gonzaga.

Is there any possibily that Gerald Smith can help at the PG position? He has played so little that it is difficult to tell if ha can handle this challange. The little I have seen of him he has played ok, just a thought. I am not giving up on our coaching staff in finding another decent PG, let's try and be positive.

Gerard is good for spot minutes. He is not very athletic and isn't good on the fast break. He's more suited to a half-court offense. He's also undersized (5'8 or so) for the point guard position. His shot is not very impressive. He could play in a pinch, but we would not be playing the way Shaka wants to. We'd have to slow it down significantly.

I'm sure our coaching staff is already recruiting other prospects. Only thing is there is so little out there at this point. He'll have to find a diamond in the rough methinks.

I mentioned this in another thread but G. Smith will not be playing next year.

i was told eblen is off the radar...chris evans from petersburg is still available but obviously not a point guard...john wall is still uncommitted :)-

A combo guard from st. petersburg named Shamon cox lists VCU among the schools recruiting him but that must be the old staff. another guard/forward from palm beach named altavious carter also lists vcu as showing interest...again...probably from the old staff..

carter already signed with somebody else I thought? shamon cox was old staff.

well looks now like it will be a freshman combo guard and a converted 2 battling for the job. Its a good thing we have the other positions covered, this would be even worse than it is now.

Hey guys, I am one of the writers for the blog, The Slipper Still Fits (link: http://www.slipperstillfits.com/ which covers Gonzaga athletics. I saw a bit of traffic coming from this site to ours regarding Vilarino and just wanted to come over here in peace!

It really does seem that it came down to Gonzaga and VCU in the race for Vilarino. I wouldn't take much of what is said on the GU Message Boards too seriously at this point. Most avid Gonzaga fans see the Vilarino (potential) commitment as the last time they will see Austin Daye play against at Gonzaga. Vilarino gives Gonzaga their sixth commitment for the class and will put us over the scholarship limit if Daye were to come back. Thus, everyone is kind of in a tizzy over what this means. Gonzaga fans tend to overthink things from time to time, especially when a situation like this is thrust upon them so quickly. I expect G.J. to come in right away and bring some defensive attitude to Gonzaga and try and toughen up this historically soft program. I can assure that G.J. will be welcome with open arms and if he proves himself to the staff, he will see the court as early as next year as Gonzaga only returns one legit point guard in Demetri Goodson. The others are combo guards that would rather be on the wing than handle the ball. Don't want to begin a whole Gonzaga conversation over here but I just wanted to establish some relations. I've been lurking around here for a few days trying to get some of the scoop and really respect all the posters around here. Good luck!
