G.J. Vilarino commits to Gonzaga

What about Eric Bledsoe? I hear he still hasn't committed to a school....any chance Shaka recruited him for Florida? <wishful thinking>

No way. He's waiting to see what John Wall does. He's between Cinci and Kentucky right now.

When I saw on the GU boards that his mom had gone to Gonzaga, the hill we had to climb began to look a lot more like a mountain.

Obviously we need to let Shaka work his plan but is it possible that maybe he needed to really be in harder on Joey? I thought I saw a comment he made about needing someone to drive the caddy or something like that?? Joey may have been leaving either way, but I just wonder if that comment didn't help matters.

If Joey's heart and head aren't in it anymore - we are better off without him. That doesn't help VCU or Joey.

The epitome of a lose-lose if you will.

God this sucks. I surely didnt expect to see this tonight when I signed on. Really think GJ is doing himself a huge disservice by not visiting VCU and making his decision anyways. Hope he enjoys waiting a couple addition years to start. This is frustrating.

Wow...the news really has me bummed out! I'm shocked that G.J. would commit to Gonzaga before even visiting VCU. I thought we had a slight edge over the Zags in his recruitment. What do we do now? We can't just go with Theus and hope that Rozzell can provide some minutes. We must nail down one more true PG. Who's left?

I hear Eric is applying for a 5th year of eligibility. ;)

If only it were true. Could you imagine Eric running the show next year...that would be one nasty team!

Alas Maynor will be in the association and we will be starting an inexperienced rookie point guard with no body with PG experience to back him up. Theus is going to be the man at the point from day one. Hope he's up for it. Frankly our season depends on it.

I concur with this statement.

I have to confess, when there was talk of Joey leaving, I figured we had a hot shot point guard in Eblen coming in and I didn't see the problem. We still have a hot shot pointguard coming in (Theus) but I now realize how valuable it would have been to have Joey here to mentor him.

That being said, heres to hoping that Theus will grow up quick next year and play like a sophomore (or junior...) by tourney time. On the upside, all the minutes he gets and all the adversity he faces so early on will really develop him into an amazing PG later on down the road.

BTW, long time reader of the boards, first time poster; I'm a 2007 vcu grad but currently live in MI so its awesome to have a venue like this to discuss vcu bball.

VCU fans...as much as I like seeing you guys not getting recruits....Theus is a very smart and more than adequate PG. IMHO he is better than Joey from the get go. As much as I hated Joey...I now wish he would have stayed and you had gotten Eblen. Theus will serve you guys very well as your starting PG. He is a tough nosed Portsmouth player. Theus's issue will be endurance and very possibly grades, but never skill. The only difference between Theus and Parker (ODU's recruit) is that Parker is little more versatile because he can play the 1,2,3 spots. Plus Parker is a little bigger and stronger. Both are very good players. If you guys can find some limited backup for Theus at the point, you will be just fine. I predict Theus will be your starting PG next year.

Yeah I talked to Maynor a bit after I had heard they scrimmaged. He was very impressed. He didn't go as far as to say he'd be better than Joey from the get-go (he wouldn't say something like that as a teammate anyway), but he had high praise for him. Thanks for the nice words BigBlue, some of the guys on here think all ODU guys are bad, but you have shown otherwise! :) Thanks for being civil! Parker and Batten seem to be great pickups for you guys and I'm sure you will be very good in the years to come. Bodes well for a strong and healthy rivalry in the future! :)

EDIT: Regarding Twyman, he was a First Team All-Met as a senior in high school. He's very athletic and would help us at the point. He's about 5'11 to 6 foot, so a little undersized but we can't be too picky. I know Mason wanted him pretty badly coming out of high school. He would be a good pickup at this point. We could certainly do a lot worse.
