My guess is that most of you do not have a crystal ball.... who knows- maybe a few of you boyz have got one! ;) Anyway, none of us knows what's going to happen this year. But here's a question- just for fun, and since there isn't much else going on in VCU land??

Who will start at the P/G slot, to start the season??

J-Rod?
Grayson?
Theus?
Rozzell?

I'll go ahead and get the ball rolling. I say Joey will take the reigns- at least to start the season.

Healthy intense competition expected for the PG position but I will go w/ Rodriguez to start due to his experience on the college level and his high basketball IQ. He will get plenty of help this year from Grayson, Theus and Rozell.

I going on record right now having never seen the guy play - Grayson will be the starting PG. If he's not starting from day one he'll be the starter by Dec. 1st.

Obviously nothing tangible to base this on other than what I've read about the guy and what I've seen from the only guy I think could block his path (JRod).

Very interesting..... You could be right Chill. Who knows. Anyway, it is a long season, and anything can happen from start to finish. My gut tells me Joey starts on day-1- jut because of the experience factor. Heck- he's started for his first 2 years, so you'd think he would be comfortable. We'll have to see what Coach Smart runs, as far as the system is concerned. But if it's close to being the same, like we've been hearing, then Joey should be pretty comfortable.

Still.... I believe he is going to get some stiff competition. And there just could be a surprise or two in store. Seems like that happens a lot in these situations- the ones, like this, where no one really knows exactly what to expect. That's when the fun really starts!

I'm going to have serious doubts about all of our freshman until they've actually proven something... the fact that they were available as late into the recruiting season as they were and seemed to have flown under a lot of radars gives me more pause than hope... I'd be glad to have 'em prove any doubts wrong to be sure, but I think there's probably a good reason that we're still apparently recruiting PGs ...

It'll be Joey until somebody takes it from him

You mean like Nick George, Troy Godwin and BA Walker (all late signees)?

Also for the folks focused on the experience angle consider this: 2003-04 starting lineup: Harper (soph), Jones (senior), Godwin (senior), Reid (junior), Doles (junior).

The 2003-04 championship winning starting lineup was: Walker (fresh), Jones (senior), Godwin (senior), George (soph), JPR (fresh). I know Harper got hurt but my point is starting off with the "experienced" lineup at the beginning of the season may be likely, sticking with it for the duration of the season is the question. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if JRod's experience advantage is very short lived.

Also, does anyone know if JRod is in Richmond this summer or did he spend most of the summer in Florida? That would also greatly impact this crystal ball question in my opinion.

Very tough question...

I'd say Joey definitely has the advantage but Coach seems pretty high on Brandon. When it comes down to it I think Joey WILL get the nod to start the season. Love the competition...definitely good for creating better point guards.

hey, I hope you're right, and I'm certainly not one who believes that frosh should sit in favor of experience no matter what... it's just that when I look at an egg, I don't just assume it's going to be the best chicken in the coop ...individual instances when late signees turned out well show that it CAN turn out well, but they do not equal that all/most/or even on-average late signees must be good

After watching the team play some pick up games this week, I think the point guard position is between Joey and Grayson. I think Joey will start, but Grayson will get significant playing time. Brandon will start at the 2 guard. He is not a point guard. Regarding Theus and Daniels, I don't see either getting much playing time at the start of the season. Neither seems to be a true point guard like Grayson and we are loaded at the 2 guard spot with Brandon, Jay Gavin and Ed Nixon. I would not be surprised to see either Theus or Daniels red shirt this year.

Art - I bet if you track it there's probably little difference in the success rate late signees versus early signees. It's hit or miss all the way around.

I think we will be running so much, everybody will get plenty of playing time. Start? Who cares? I'm more interested in who finishes.

JROD hands down.

I have been doing some thinking....we got some real weapons this year - you got Broz and Gavin lighting it up for the 2 spot, you got the House of Burgess and downtown TJ and Kirill the Hammer/and Big Time Skeens on the other side pushing it inside. Then of course we got the Landlord down under.

So I see some kickouts to an unguarded JROD outside of the 3 - whoosh!

The defense then has to cover JROD more closely which leaves us our other weapons.

JROD all the way.

I look at it this way. Coach Grant brought Joey (a three star recruit out of HS) in to back-up Eric Maynor and if all went well, eventually replace him. Joey was highly touted coming out of high school and remember there was talk that he would go with Grant if he accepted the FLA job a couple of years ago. Instead of accepting a back-up role, he earned a starting position at the two guard his Freshman year and never relinquished it. I have no doubt he will have every opportunity to lead this team at the point at the beginning of the season and I personally believe he will be the undisputed starting point guard by the end of the year.

By the way, guys, BRozz is not a point guard! He**, he wouldn't even pass the ball to an open teammate on the fast break...ever!

Joey will get it to start the season, but after the Oklahoma game when Joey has about 10 turnovers then Grayson will get the starts.
