GJ Vilarino

Do you think Eblen would still want to come if we have another big-time PG coming in?

I hope he sees that we have a need at point guard and that we need more than one. I'd like to think he understands the situation. The nice thing is that the longer he waits, the better it is for us. If he really wanted out, he'd be gone already. This for the reason that spots at other schools are quickly filling up every day and if he waits longer there won't be any spots for him. That makes me believe that he is still committed to playing at VCU. In Smart's system we are going to need multiple point guards to keep bodies fresh. No reason that Eblen or Villarino will lack playing time. There are plenty of minutes available at their position. In fact, all of the minutes are available right now.

Plenty of time available at the point guard spot, and i expect VCU to play at a fast pace, there is room for both. If i was a guard i would look forward to playing with Larry, able to take more chances on defense and run out on offense.

any reports on how his meeting with shaka went? they were supposed to meet this weekend I believe.

It went very well from what I understand. He's still committed to VCU at the moment. :)

it has been a tough 4-5 weeks since the ucla loss. things are slowly coming around and i am getting more comfortable with events as they play out. smart is a great hire and his staff loooks top notch. if GJ can see what shaka is putting together and buys into it we could be very strong next year...

Yeah, like DB said right now all 40 min are available at PG. I would love to have two highly rated incoming freshmen competing for those mins. They should both push each other to a higher level in practice to earn their mins. Not only will we be playing a fast paced game, but freshmen can be inconsistent. Vilarino could be off one night while Ben is on fire and vice versa We will need a steady hand at the point if we are going to remain on top of the league. It doesn't necessarily have to be the same hand every game, but it will have to be the player who is able to limit mistakes and get our scorers involved on that particular night.

If we can get him, which it sounds like he is close to becoming a Ram it will be great for us.

gj is a lefty too, so we may have two lefties at PG

Who were some other great lefties at VCU? Ivan Chappel, Scott Marston.

There are very few teams that can get away with having 1 "Floor General" (I guess Maynor fit that bill)...but the CAA is a guards' league, and any savvy recruit who wants to up the ante to grow as a player and meet new challenges would be loathe to turn a school down because another player at his position is coming in. Especially considering the DIRE need of guards for the squad.
I'm sure GJ and Ben realize the oppurtunity in front of them.
1)Outgoing senior who was scouted constantly by the NBA (regardless of his CAA status)
2)Remaining NBA project who will no doubt be scouted constantly (good for them to be seen as well)
3)Great winning tradition
4)Play in meaningful poat season tourneys ;)
5)Hungry new coach with a guard-centric approach (commited to full court pressure/tenacious D, feed the big man, etc)
6) A known non-BCS program....not some backwater where you hope for media attention once a week in March.

All very good points that the coaching staff no doubt is drilling into G.J. and Gerry's heads right now. :)

G.J and Eblen can do alot to keep the tradition going VCU might turn into PGU  . If they both come and grow like Maynor did, we will have HS guards lining up to play at VCU.

That would be awesome! :) VCU has had a strong tradition of great guards over the last several years. It's been the key to our success. As Vram likes to say, we've been in 5 of the last 8 CAA finals, all of which were due to great guard play. We've had guards like Maynor, Shuler, BA Walker, Jesse Pellot-Rosa, Dom Jones, Michael Doles, Willie Taylor, and several similarily talented players. Here's to hoping Eblen and hopefully Vilarino keep the strong tradition of VCU guards going. I think we'll find that Gavin will fit in nicely with that group.
