GJ Vilarino

naa it probably won't be #3 but he may be sayin you're jersey gonna be right up there next to mine someday

this gj thing is eating me out, I'm not very patient. I know it's a life changing decision for him but hurry the heck up, you too Ben.

I thought about that a little bit before I posted it. It came to mind because he is a Maynor fan and wore the #3 in high school. I agree that it would be very soon, but also it would be nice for the next person that wears that number (it wasn't retired so at some point it will be worn again) to understand what it means to VCU fans. Since he has followed Maynor during his time at VCU if we put the #3 on his back I don't think that is something that he would take lightly.

I wondered about that this year, how Rozzell wears #5 but Duncan's jersey is in the rafters. I assumed the ones up there were actually retired...

They retire Jerseys, but not numbers. Given the relatively small amount of numbers available in college basketball and the turnover of players leaving, retiring numbers is very rare. We don't do it at VCU.

Yep- We retire jerseys- not numbers, and IMO, that's the right way to handle it. Heck- as for the #3 jersey, tons of guards want that # right now- mainly because of D-Wade. Just like 23 for Jordan, 24 for Coby, etc. I would have to think that we'll be seing a #3 pretty quickly- especially if we sign 3 guards (including Theus). I thought I saw on here where Vilarino is wearing the #3. My guess is, if he comes, he'll have it.

Not to mention Allen Iverson is a #3 as well and made that number popular well before Wade was donning it.

Don't forget Dennis Johnson before that.

Pretty sure Pete Maravich wore #23 too. Did he also sport #45?

If so that would be weird, cause didn't Jordan rock the #45 after his return?

We really need G.J now

Well we offer him something few can, the opportunity to start right away at a good program and likely be a 4-year starter.

I think he did. I think that was his number in the minors, baseball that is. Montgomery Biscuits was it?

District, you are right on!
The opportunity to be a 4 year starter is incredibly valuable. Look at the PG's that will be drafted this year. Eric isn't the only one from a non-BCS conference. Coaches can realistically push the "play for 4 instead of sitting for 2" school of thought and kids will listen (if they are smart).

Who else do you think we like if GJ says no thanks?
