RICHMOND - Gov-elect Bob McDonnell fancies the idea of an all-Virginia holiday season college basketball tournament.

In a live radio interview on SportsPhone with Big Al on Richmond's ESPN950 Tuesday, McDonnell warmed to the idea of an annual tournament at the Richmond Coliseum.

Possible teams mentioned to him included Virginia, Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth and Richmond.

McDonnell called it "a great idea." He even proposed a name for it: the Governor's Classic.

McDonnell, a Notre Dame alumnus, spent several minutes talking Fighting Irish football with host Al Coleman.

The incoming governor closed the 10-minute segment by singing the school's famous fight song.

That would be great. If this happens I will vote to re-elect him no matter if he can run again or not. Has he been to a VCU game this year? I think I have seen Tim Kaine at three or more.

Any day, any time. Line them up, pick them off.

deja vu....RTD Tournament.

I do wonder why someone else (company) didn't take it over when RTD dropped out. Or was it because schools decided to drop out?

...or GMU. You know, the NoVA area is a must win for reelection ;)

Also understand that with these four teams, you could not likely do a true tournament format. Virginia and Virginia Tech aren't likely to want to play each other again.

If you wanted to do a true tournament format, you might have to swap out one of the ACC schools for somebody like Liberty.

Additionally, there's no guarantee that VCU and Richmond would want to play each other twice, or give up their series, in its current format.

I really like the idea of an All-Virginia Tourney. That said, I doubt it would happen.

There are so many Virginia schools though, they could have a bracket of at least eight. ODU, Richmond, W&M, GMU, VCU, Virginia Tech, UVa and JMU, Radford, and more. Where is Georgetown technically located?

I would be ok with just a single day event matching up VCU and Richmond with either Tech or UVA. I don't see Tech or UVA going for that though. The women could be included as well with the same parings to make it a two day event.

Georgetown is in the District of Columbia

to avoid duplication of conference play it could be set up so there's only ever 1 team per conference, with different teams rotating in and out each season where needed ...maybe even set up 2 separate tourneys, and have those rotate between Richmond, Tidewater, NoVa, and Roanoke
