Grant Wins Out Over Capel for Point Guard

capel doesn't need a point guard...not a great loss. Tommy Mason Griffin will start from the get go and probably start for 4 years for JC.

Unless there's an Alex Harper clone that we don't know about for the Sooners.

Who cares? I am focused on Brandenburg, Reco McCarter, and whomever else (WE) sign.... I could honestly care less who these guys sign right now.

Doesn't have any thing to do with VCU, but this recruit looks like he might be good enough to relegate Eblen to the bench. Maybe he shouldn't have backed out on us.

What did he expect as a 3-star recruit going to an SEC school like Alabama? He was going to get recruited over the moment he stepped foot on campus. Coach Grant is too good a recruiter to have a 3-star PG starting for an SEC school. Eblen will hopefully get some minutes here and there though. It's all past history now anyway. Wish them the best of luck when they aren't playing us.

If I were Eblen I'd transfer now and get the year off over with.

Who knows though...maybe he'll use this as fuel for his fire...but the odds are definitely already against him with the returning talent, this new recruit, and the caliber of player I expect Grant to bring in.

Things have a way of working out. Eblen left us for Alabama. He was an 87 and a top 30 PG when he signed with us, and was lowered to an 85 and the #71 PG in his class based on their April evaluation of him after he signed with Alabama.

Meanwhile we get Darius Theus (ESPN grade 89, #21 PG in the country):

AND: Issiah Grayson (ESPN 87, #43 PG):

We get two point guards way late in the recruiting season who are both more highly ranked and well regarded then Eblen when all was said and done. So it worked out better for us. 8-)

I wasn't saying that we were going to be any worse off without him, but just that he screwed himself by following AG. You don't hear very often about a BCS caliber recruit going mid major and regretting it, but things like this happen all of the time. He could prove me wrong, who knows, but I don't expect him to get much playing time as part of the Crimson Tide. Even if he didn't want to come to VCU I am sure there were better options out there then this.

I am quite sure he will enjoy his 4 years on the pine at Bama- or his transfer. it will add some "life experience." The (2) Point Guards we signed are substantially better- on paper, and I'm betting it pans out that way too. I could care less about Eblen, Grant, or any of the signees he's working.

I'm all about VCU basketball right now- and that includes Coach Smart and staff, as well as the guys we have coming in. I'm jacked about it!

Anthony Grant signed point guard Ben Eblen this year and recently got a commitment from a higher rated point guard Trevor Releford for 2010. Did he just recruit over Eblen?

That happens. Eblen is a good player and I’m a fan of his game but truth be told, if he is your point guard, you aren’t beating teams like Kentucky, Florida, Tennessee, Ole Miss and South Carolina right now. Enter Releford. He at least gives you a shot in the highly competitive SEC right now.

The Tide coaches love Releford’s feel for the game and his ability to run a team. They believe he can be a starter from the day he gets to Tuscaloosa.

Moreover, Alabama needed Eblen in the 2009 class for depth purposes. A point guard was a need in 2010 regardless.

Wonder if Grant told Eblen he was just for depth purposes when he was on his moms couch wearing his crimson polo
