The Chicago Bulls, on the other hand, don't need the 17th pick in the draft to turn into a superstar in order to save their franchise from eternal mediocrity. When it boils down to it, the Bulls are counting on the further development of Derrick Rose and, of course, the wooing of a major free agent this summer.
Joakim Noah is the team's starting center, and that's pretty much all they've got going at the five spot for next season. If the team doesn't re-sign Brad Miller, and that is by no means a certainty, then there's a need to bulk up that frontcourt, and there a few players that could be available in the middle of the first round to fill that need.
One of those guys is VCU's Larry Sanders, who Bulls brass has reportedly grown increasingly enamored with as the process has gone on. It's also possible they snatch up defensive specialist Ekpe Udoh if he slips that far, or even Cole Aldrich or Solomon Alabi. All are affable centers that could do good things backing up Noah, but Sanders appears to be the guy they've got on top of their list of realistic possibilities at #17.

FWIW, Michael Anderson told me the same thing a couple of days ago. He's been talking with Larry about workouts and such since they are both in a similar situation trying to get into the league. He said that the Bulls loved him and wanted to trade up ahead of Milwaukee when they heard he was promised at 15. It will be interesting though. This draft is so unpredictable and very deep. I'm sure we'll see some surprises and first-round talents may end up slipping to the top of the first round. Honestly you could go to 40 and have them all be first-round calibre talents.
With the lockout having threatened a lot of college players, you have one of the deepest drafts in recent memory. There's not a lot of star power like the LeBron, Carmelo, Wade, Bosh class, but lots of mid-level solid role players and a couple of legitimate stars.
