RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Commonwealth University Athletics invites all of its followers and fans to join Rams’ Men’s Basketball Coach Shaka Smart for VCU’s first-ever Barnstorming Tour in October. The tour will give the Rams an opportunity to preview the 2009-2010 season, as well as kick off their “Shoot for 1,000” campaign.

The tour begins on Thursday, Oct. 15 at the brand new T-Miller’s Sports Bar and Grill inside the Richmond Marriott, on the corner of Broad and 6th Streets, from 6-8 p.m. The first hour will be a social with light appetizers provided by VCU Athletics.

At 7 p.m., VCU Athletic Director Norwood Teague will briefly outline the Ram Athletic Fund’s exciting new initiative, “Shoot for 1,000”, which can earn fans a trip to VCU’s Dec. 19 game at Tulane in New Orleans. Immediately following, Smart will take a look into the season with a question and answer session with the “Voice of the Rams” Robby Robinson. Smart will also take questions from the fans in attendance.

The following Thursday, Oct. 22, the Barnstorming Tour heads to the Southside, where the program will be replicated at Champps in the Stony Point Fashion Park. Appetizers will be available, courtesy of VCU Athletics, and Coach Smart will continue to preview the upcoming season.

“Our hope is that no matter where you live in Richmond, you can make one of these two events,” Teague said. “It’s a chance for our fans to get an inside look at the team from Coach Smart and also learn about this new program that is part of the Ram Athletic Fund.”

Admission into these events is free. The Rams open their regular season on Friday Nov. 13, when they host against Bethune-Cookman at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Siegel Center.

I hear it comes free when you renew your teams uniform contract ;)

If any thing is said this week that was left out last week please feel free to pass along the update. I couldn't make it this week, but hopefully there was another good turnout.

I went. I was surprised by the very good turnout. My compliments to Champps on an excellent food spread and for not letting the food run out.

I don't know if Shaka gave a speech or not. I spoke to him very early after he arrived and then left to go see my kids before bedtime. In my very brief conversation with the coach, he said, "we are still recruiting for one or two spots...we are not going after a specific position, but after the best players available...he had nothing but praise for the results from the strength and conditioning coach...Gavin is ready to play...Skeen's conditioning needs to come along a little further...he likes and more importantly his wife likes Richmond."

My first meeting with the coach, I found him open, very friendly, gracious, and measured his words very carefully.

Some of Shaka’s speech highlights:
-He is big on Theus, mentioned he very well maybe the starting PG.
-He has put Larry with the three freshmen during practice sessions and they won ¾ of the competitions.
-Practices have been super competitive, Skeen seems to be the least conditioned to the press/havoc style; however, he said Skeen is easily the most offensively gifted player.
-We are on the verge of having the greatest recruiting class ever at VCU; we are going after a lot of players that SEC teams want.
-We welcome home and home series with anyone, he mentioned UNC.
-Both UVA and VATech coaches turned us down for a home and home, both saying they have nothing to gain from it.

Man, sounds great in some ways-looks like all five newcomers are creating a stir in practice. Gavin and Theus the best three pt shooters, Skeen the most offensively talented and Larry and 3 freshman whipping up on the rest 3/4 of the time? What have we here folks? I cannot wait till next thurs.-Gonna be fun yall!

Great words from our new man behind the tie! I think we will really dig Coach Smart and be successful. I love the fact that he wants to challenge UVA and tech. And UNC! But not on thier terms.
