How are you feeling right now about the team and program?

Pete Strayhorn. I think it was Pollio's second year. He didn't end the season as our leading scorer, but he was in double figures.
I mean, walk-on or no, if he's averaging double figures, he should have been playing.

I agree with most here about the NIT. It is very reasonable to expect and be excited about it.

I would also say it is reasonable to be mildly disappointed in MR had not won an NCAA game up until his departure.

However, I also think the forum's aggregate judgement that MR's tenure was trending the program back towards a dumpster fire (ala 1990's and early 2000's) was ridiculous.

A real dumpster fire performance would be Patrick Ewing, Mike Woodson, Josh Pastner, Tom Crean, Paul Hewitt, Chris Holtmann...all of whom destroyed or are currently in the process of destroying winning programs...with 0 for in conference records in some instances.

It's apples and oranges.

I feel this team is headed for 20-11, 12-6. That is a good first season for Coach Ryan Odom. It should be enough for a top 4 seed. I think we win our remaining three home games (vs St. Joe’s, Rhody, and Duquesne) and play competitively but lose at Richmond and Dayton. Stealing one of those (most likely at UR) would be ideal to end the season 21-10, 13-5. I still think this team gets a top 4 A10 Tournament seed and needs to win three games in three days in Brooklyn to dance in the NCAAT. It’s improbable (as it is for everyone not named Dayton) but still possible. We have shown we can beat Dayton, Richmond, and Loyola-Chicago.

If VCU doesn’t win it all in Brooklyn, winning a game or two would get them to 21-22 wins and I think they’ll make the NIT which I really would still like to see them play in for the experience, extra practices, and more games for this squad.
All predictors have us going 20-11, 12-6. Not bad.
The other team with 6 conference losses is likely Umass (4 games left, toughest is at Davidson). So, it is more likely we will be the 5th seed - unless lightning really strikes two more times and gm beats Loyola and ur down the stretch, then we'd be 6th.

So, is everyone going to the A-10 tournament? Will you travel to this hopeful NIT game?

Or maybe a slightly better chance at 4th than 5th?

So just so we’re clear you are saying Rhoades being hired was a mistake then as he unperformed in your opinion?
You didn't ask me but I'll weigh in with my opinion.
  • No it was not a mistake to higher MR.
  • The last extension/contract revision was a mistake as he was underperforming..."overall" relative to the value of the contract
My biggest issues were coaching staff management and in game adjustments. The smartest thing PSU did was "hire" an offensive coach for the staff. Had JD Byers opportunity at Va Tech come one year earlier, MR might still be at VCU.

Looking at the remaining schedule, I still think we're 5th, hoping for 4th with a Umass loss.
Umass lost to Lasalle just before our game with them; they can certainly lose any of their remaining games with at Davidson having the highest probability. With 4th place on the line, I think Umass is going to fight like they did against us. I think they end up 4th. Who knows?

Being fourth with a double bye is important but a fifth seed might have an easier road to the finals.

The road as the 5th seed is the same road the 4th seed has to take. You just have an extra game along the way.

Both the 5 or the 4 seed seem to involve us crossing paths with UMass. Would be nice if we could sneak into the 3 and avoid them or the Bonnies (assume they'd get KO'd along the way).

You are certsinly correct with “Who knows?”.
This season teams seem to be more unpredictable than ever.

i do believe that KenPom sees it like this:

Team/A10 losses/%to win out
Loyola/2/2.5%
VCU/4/3.0%
mason/6/7.2%
henrico/2/9.9%
mass/6/19.3%
Dayton/3/36.1%

Everyone else has 7 losses.

This will probably be the most pessimistic post I make this season. And I sincerely hope I am wrong and the boys keep getting better.

I think the win over Dayton is likely going to be the high water mark of this season. I think we got too many deficiencies rn to go much further.

Max is really talented, but he doesn't take over games. An alpha that isn't alphaing.

Zeb is just not a scorer. Great defender. Fast. Ball handler. Can't shoot. Can't finish at the rim. Imagine how this team looks if you put Nunn or Ace in his spot.

Our 3 spot is either Belle, who is simply not college ready on one side of the ball, and Bairstow doesn't seem to handle the physicality of the A10 and can 0-8 at any moment.

Bam is a competent but completely streaky scorer. Can drop 30. Can go 3-15 on any given night.

Our front court is paper thin. Fermin plays small, Kuany is basically an outside shooter, and Tobi can jump high but is raw and kinda out of position. We got no rebounding, no interior scoring, no toughness down low.

The teams success is entirely dependent on 3 pt shooting. At times we seem to move the ball well, but we get away from it a lot and just rely on Max and Bam shooting us to victory.
I don't have any issue with this post. I've enjoyed watching this roller coaster of a season, but it'd be foolish to confidently believe this team *WILL* win 3 or 4 consecutive games in 4 or 5 days on a neutral court in Brooklyn with the lack of interior scoring. I'm not saying it won't happen because Championship Week typically has a few funky conference tournament results, but I wouldn't bank on it.
