They did hang with a couple of top 10 teams, but the one they beat won't be top 10 for long, and shouldn't be (but might still be) top 25.

Does anyone know why we a scheduled Elizabeth City? Clearly it wasn’t to work on turnovers and shot selection. It seems odd to schedule a game after Thanksgiving that is of no value. Division II win is meaningless to a tournament selection committee. They will toss it out. If we’re hungry for DII why not Va Union, VA State or Randolph Macon?

Games vs D2 aren't counted against strength of schedule like bad D1 teams do

Because sometimes you do. 14 of 15 A10 teams scheduled non-D1s during the regular season this season.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. I think it's classy. I felt like I wish during the game they would have put up more of a fight, until the Technical/Ejection happened (which i did not see was looking elsewhere, and wanna know how it happened, will see later), but then at that point, I wanted to see them pummeled into oblivion. I don't know how much they showed on TV (hopefully not a lot), but he was down on the court rolling around for a bit there, and it was worrying. Other than that, it was a good game, a great tuner up for the younger players, and mid-OOC it seems like a good idea to me.
I think it’s smart. Get a tune up in a live game situation before better opponents but no need to risk losing to a landline that will rank your season.

Back to back time defending national champs and a team that will still be insanely good this year. Plus they flat out blew them out. That team will be top 25.

Mistake scheduling a D2 opponent (if this was strictly a “scheduling philosophy” decision). Unnecessary.
For a potential fringe bubble team like VCU, D1 win totals and NET metrics could matter (a lot) come Selection Sunday (particularly for a non-P6 at-large resume). Lost opportunity to enhance/increase both.
Shaka/Will/Mike always scheduled all D1 opponents (as they should’ve). VCU leads all (270+) non-P6 programs in at-large bids since 2011 (by a significant margin). The proven (VCU at-large scheduling) formula for NCAA tourney selection success (in the A-10) has been well-established (by and for VCU) over the years.
The above statistics span both the RPI and NET era (as key baseline NCAA evaluation metrics). It’s even more egregious now (with the NET in place) to pass on a D1 home game (win) opportunity to also possibly (and perhaps significantly) boost your efficiency numbers (NET metrics).
The in-house “analytics” guy should know this and have been consulted (if he wasn’t). Wondering if this “D2 scheduling decision” was somehow budget-oriented. Perhaps there were some other administrative challenges going on behind the scenes.

The Mountain West has addressed scheduling non D-1 teams in its bylaws, and seems to frame it as a limitation, rather than a goal... except by being so specific about the limitation, it's almost like a wink and a nudge.

Maybe that extra $$$$ that used to be used for scheduling..... now they need it for NIL?

We've been around and around about this. It's because of analytics that they're doing this.
1) Most importantly: if you schedule another low D1 school, and perhaps beat them by only 5-7 points, it can hurt your NET far more than it helps. Analytics and risk-reward.
2) It's a good way to get a tune-up in the middle of your OOC.
3) It would have been hard to get a game against anyone halfway decent on Friday or Saturday, because most teams play their MTEs that week.
