How are you feeling right now about the team and program?

Avila only shot 8 free throws on 5 fouls. He was not the problem. Gibson Jimerson was the problem. He scored 26 points against VCU. VCU had no answer for him and could not stop him.
In the context of the discussion we were talking about bigs. So I was commenting on Avila. Yeah, Jimerson went off on us, don’t disagree. Context matters.

You guys act like the VCU job is garbage. P4 coaches (Bennett/Larranaga/Wright) are quitting for a reason. The VCU head coaching job actually has a better built in safety net for its coaches than most P4 schools do. Until the NCAA/Congress gets a handle on NIL and the transfer portal, you are probably going to see more P4 coaches hang up their whistle because they don't like the current environment.

The VCU head coach position is a good job but coaches are leaving here fairly often for a reason. Money is likely the biggest factor but there are likely other factors such as wanting to challenge yourself to compete at a higher level. I hope RO stays but I don't feel that he came here to stay long.

I was talking before the UR game to someone fairly high up in the athletic department. We were both commenting how great it was to have a full student section. He said getting the students out has been a problem this year. As a PR guy, I offered a few suggestions, but said really it comes down to creating excitement, and the best way to do that may be winning a couple of games in the NCAA Tournament. He said, and I quote, “Yeah, but when we do that, our coach leaves and we have to start all over again.”

If vcu fails the big dance...who would be excited about being invited to the new Vegas tournament this spring!..I bet it pays better than the NIT!

We should resign to the fact Odom is gone after this year. It'll be good timing for him & the fans with the lose of virtually all of the offense. Perfect timing i'd say...it's going to be a rebuild year regardless. And Odom doesn't need to prove himself, per se. He's won at every college and he has NCAA experience.
Now ...will it be UVA or Wake?

This guy I was talking to is NOT convinced Odom will leave at the end of the season. Take that for what it's worth.

Agree. I hope our alumni can pony up HC compensation package to keep RO. If so, then on-going program comparisons with Memphis and Gonzaga can become realistic; otherwise, we overhaul rosters every 3-4 years, which has been killing us.

We especially need the A10 programs located in (Philly and RIC, multi-team core markets) to all step it up with pay and coaching retention of top-tier coaches. Truth is we need conf improvement. UR and other private schools in A10 need to put significant financial resources into men’s bb. If not, becoming a consistent multi bid league will be elusive on-going in the age of NIL. The A10 has many private (well funded endowments and/or alumni with deep pockets) schools who don’t appear to demand being top 50 ongoing. It’s a major reason we likely could be a one bid league again this year.

Between paying for NIL, the house settlement and the athletics village I'm not sure how much higher the HC compensation package can get.
