How are you feeling right now about the team and program?

I think it really comes down to how much connection you felt. VCU being a big part of my life (Undergrad, Rowdies, friends, etc) for many years pretty much solidified it. The Bama RVA chapter reached out to me during going through their grad stuff and welcomed me in to gatherings, football stuff, etc which is a big reason I started to embrace them. We just went fishing together the other day and they’ve been following/checking on my wrist injury constantly from my golf championship (I’ve had a wrist tear that may require surgery). Very great group of people.
Personally, I don’t see any reason why feeling connected to a school that you attended post-grad would be weird. I do find it odd that a person would completely abandon his own school for one his daughter attends. This guy wears Gators gear nearly as much as I wear VCU gear … and that’s a lot. This guy is an odd one, though. He used to have some pride in attending UR but the story changed in recent years and he says he never felt like he fit in. More likely it’s that there’s very little to be proud of in terms of sports at UR anymore, and he likes the idea of rooting for a power conference school.

Side note that our son is a junior at CNU right now, so a lot of our money goes down to Newport News. I’ll wear my CNU pullover or t-shirt happily because I think it’s a great school, but not to the exclusion of being a VCU fan through-and-through.

Definitely nothing wrong with pulling for or feeling connected to a school you attended post-grad at. There's also nothing wrong in general with pulling for or wearing gear of a school that one of your kids, or any family members attended.

And yeah you're prob right.... its prob because the 2 sports people care about most... are meh. UR MBB is awful in general.... but every couple years they have a team that comes out of nowhere & is really good. Football is hit or miss. This year they were a solid FCS team.... but a lot of times they're middle of the road-ish.

Wonder if the next time UR makes an NCAA Tourney.... and or beats VCU.... if all of a sudden that guy will be supporting UR again.

I got my MBA at UR, so the only time I hate them is when they play VCU, where I got my undergrad degree. Otherwise, I would hate them all the time.

My sister is a UVA grad, her husband is an SMU grad, and they met at grad school at Stanford. Collectively they focus on SMU football and UVA basketball, but Stanford is (THEIR) thing which makes sense because it is where they met.

Side Note: I don't think they had Stanford-UVA-SMU being in the same conference on their bingo card when they met in 2010.

That’s gotta be a fun household now lol. I do wonder how long this ACC arrangement can work though. UCLA was losing it in a Press Conference recently about travel. Stanford’s must be h e l l.

VCU will always be main gig/love over anyone but getting the full football season experience is kind of cool especially some possible SEC stadium trips with the chapter. Stanford SOM for a grad cert program was awesome and I’m super thankful for a scholarship they did but definitely don’t follow as hard. Though when my UVA friends ask about catching the games now I’m always open to it.

Luckily I attended a grad school only program (UT-Houston) which does not have an athletic department nor undergrad programs. I have allegiance to my grad program and school but it does not extend to sports or undergrad. When it comes to basketball and sport, I am all in on VCU!

VCU is way to good of a job to hire an NCAA assistant (right now). It made sense with JC, AG, & SS, but I'd lean successful NCAA coach.

I like what Mike Morrell, Mike Jones, and Jamal Brunt did at VCU, but they can keep their current jobs.
So if Mason makes it to the NCAA..would you be okay with Ed hiring Tony Skinn?:D

Yup. I’ve got two at UVA right now but don’t wear any UVA stuff. Closest I come is a little orange and blue in my shirt for parents weekend. It’s their journey, and not mine. VCU is the only school in my blood (although I’m very fond of JMU where my wife and oldest son attended).

I have been a Gator football fan since I was 5 years old. My first Christmas present that I can remember was a radio to listen to UF football games growing up in Orlando, BUT when I attended my first VCU (RPI) game in ‘67 as a student I was hooked. I still love and root for the Gators, but Rams mens BB is my favorite team. Always will be.

My kids went to GW, Tennessee and Hampden Sydney and while these schools got plenty of my money they are not my teams.

I truly believe this year’s Rams are capable of a long run in the NCAA tourney. We have the A10 poy in Max and a first team all A10 player in Joe. Add Phil’s dawg, Zeb’s athleticism and leadership, the front line growth from Jack, Luke, Belle and Ferm and our our amazing frosh guards and you have a recipe for success.
