VCU change conferences? Being that VCU is one or two every year for the largest university in the Commonwealth is it possible to change to a BCS athletic conference. VCU has alot to offer a conference given our schools abilty to maintain top level athletics in all sports we field teams.

There is absolutely no way VCU gets invited to a BCS conference without a football program. Without football, you could not ask for a better conference than the CAA. IMHO of course.

Most likely it would have to be an offer from a BCS conference that is realigning itself and looking for new members.

Does Depaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. Johns, and Seton Hall have a football team?

Georgetown does..although they are in the Patriot league or something like that

In fact Georgetown has a FCS football program. Depaul had one a long time ago, but dropped it in the 30s. Seton Hall played D2 but dropped it 20 some years ago. As for the rest I am not sure.

I agree that VCU is NOT going to get an invitation to a BCS conference anytime in the foreseeable future and probably without at least having an FCS program with an eventual goal to make it a BCS program.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the teams you mentioned joined the Big East some time ago. The trend these days is that the top mid-major leagues are trying to become "more major" by adding schools that have football. And BCS schools are definitely not taking FCS programs or programs without football at any level.

I like the CAA. If we were in a BCS conference the charm of being a potential cinderella would vanish. How special is it to be Kentucky and be disappointed when you don't win a national championship? What fun is that? Be careful what you wish for - - right now VCU is in a great "sweet spot" IMO. We are getting better press and building credibility for the school (which is what this should be about anyway) and we still have the charm of potentially being a giant slayer on any given year.

Aren't all of those schools private Catholic schools? I don't think VCU, a public institution, wants to realign with a bunch of private Catholic schools. That's half of the problem now in the Big East and A10. The public schools and private schools are not a good fit for each other.

I don't understand the whole public private school thing..what difference does it make when it comes down to Athletics?

I've heard people say it before but why does it matter?

without football, it's highly unlikely we ever get invited to a "BCS" league, primarily because the whole BCS structure is organized around sharing the BCS football TV money pot... but things on the big picture level can change over time ...for example they could start real d1 playoffs and the TV money cartel might lose power to the NCAA (as is the case in basketball) ...there would still obviously be advantages to being in the more powerful conferences, but it wouldn't necessarily be as locked in by the BCS near-monopoly ...popularity, and the money it brings, and who then controls the money, will play the biggest role in the shape of things to come

stuff changes and evolves over time... consider that both basketball and football as we know them are only in the one hundred year old or so range, and even within that time have changed quite a bit ...sometimes we talk as if the way things are is the way things have always been or will always be

Thats Deep :D

If you look at the private Catholic schools in general, most don't want any part of football. Big East schools with 1A football - WVU, USF, Louisville, Cincinnati, UConn, Rutgers, Pitt, Syracuse. Notre Dame is independent and Villanova is FCS. Every non-football school left is a private Catholic school - DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, St, Johns, Seton Hall, Providence. Throw in Notre Dame and Villanova for all sports other than football and the Catholic schools for years have tried to control the conference. The A10's setup is similiar, except most football schools in that conference are FCS. There has always been friction in the Big East between the public schools and private Cathlic schools.

I expect that the at some point the BCS as we know it today will crumble...I am not a lawyer (and didn't sleep at a holiday inn last night) but how is it legal to pick 5-6 conferences and automatically guarantee them big paydays for finishing 3rd or 4th in their conference while the #1 schools in a non-BCS conferences are basically guaranteed nothing? If they are guaranteed anything it is pittance compared to the BCS programs. The BCS is basically a cartel and I say bust that poop up.
