I don't do this often but sometimes we all need some help....
Jan 15th for the Northeastern game, the band is hosting our first "Band Day". Most major conference school do something very similar, and now with my 2nd year running all operations of the band it is time to start promoting our band and the basketball team to the best of our ability.
We have emailed all local high schools and through word of mouth getting the word to middles schools as well. I have decided to expand our thinking to ANYONE that would like to play. That is where your help is needed. If you know anyone that plays an instrument and would like to participate pass them the bands information.
The layout for the day will be as follows.....
Arrive 8am
Sectional rehearsals for an hour
Group rehearsal
I will provide lunch
Group rehearsal into game time.
There is ZERO cost for the participants. I am going to approach coach Smarts wife to play. She plays piccolo. In addition to it not costing anything there are discounted tickets available to the participants family members who wish to watch there kids perform.
I can not tell you how excited I am about this event. This has been a dream of mine for awhile and just the next step in our development into a major program on our end.
In other news I wanted to fill you guys in on some other things that have been going on in the bands world.
We all know money makes thing run and the world spin. The same is the case for our band. Some other bands out there put on benefit concerts and dinners and such to raise money for their programs. Those efforts have turned out very good for them. At this time WE DO NOT HAVE PLANS TO PUT ON A FUND RAISING DRIVE ( I am certainly not saying if your heart leads you to contribute that you shouldn't.) We have prided ourselves on being a blue collar, work for what you have, and get the most out of a little type of band (Now with that being said please understand we are funded by the AD, and with out that we would be unable to operate.) This year we have been allowed to work concessions at the Seigel Center to EARN extra money for our budget. So far so good! The events we have worked we have done really well and we are being put on more events.
We have already fielded a smaller group of musicians to play outside events from our basketball games. This smaller group is called "The Diet Peppas". You may be out in Cary Town or at a mall or at the ODU game or other outside events and hear music coming from sidewalk play. DO NOT walk away from it. Be curious because it may be us playing. Our mission will be to add more culture to the city in our own way. Playing on sidewalks and anywhere. We also wanna take our show on the road for SOME away games and play before the games outside of the opposing fans gym. We will see how that goes!
We are also looking into hosting a Marching Band competition NEXT YEAR! The event will be at Sports Backers Stadium. Yet another step into transforming into a MAJOR program. This event has so much potential from many different angles and after basketball season that is where my focus will be.
We are also taking under "The Peppa" umbrella an indoor winter guard. For those of you who may be lost with this one, it is the flags that you see with a marching band who perform indoors and do a routine to recorded music and compete. This move is to help prepare us for the future
The plan right now is that in 2012 VCU will yield its own Marching Band. Why you may ask?? Well you figure it out. If the F word doesn't come around for 10 years then the band will do guest performances and exhibition performances at local high schools and try to compete with professional marching bands.
As you can see the band has its hands full! Thank you once again for your support. I understand what we do isn't for everyone but we really have a passion for growth. If you have any questions or comments or ideas, because I understand there are a lot of people out there smarter than me, and always welcome fresh ideas. Please do not hesitate to contact me. You may do so here or.....

This is also the email to use for anyone that may be interested in playing with us for band day. Thanks!
