WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue sophomore guard Kelsey Barlow has been suspended for the remainder of the season for conduct detrimental to the team.

The school made the announcement on Tuesday.

It's a blow for a team that had lost two straight heading into the NCAA tournament. Purdue, the No. 3 seed in the Southwest Region, will face No. 14 seed Saint Peter's on Friday in second-round action.

Purdue coach Matt Painter has called Barlow one of the best perimeter defenders in the Big Ten conference. Painter said the situation was disappointing, but the team would move forward.

Let's not look too far ahead, USC --> Georgetown --> Purdue (or not)

Sheesh... ya all are stressed out. At this point has nothing to do with VCU, Just information...to be considered for those who's brackets aren't due until after tonight's games.

So, this has now become relevant for VCU. How big of a loss is this guy?

He's a SOPH...Avgs. 19.5 Min...47% FG shooter...15% from 3...64% at the line...5.1 PPG...other stats look pedestrian...

anything else? Seems like a good role player...wonder if that is on the D side?

In other news, we could have an FSU/VCU Sweet Sixteen match-up. My daughter goes to FSU, but everyone will be rooting for the Rams, including her.

Kelsey is a quick, athletic player whose natural position is the 3, but he spent some time backing up LewJack at the 1 as well. His offensive abilities are limited. He has absolutely no jumper, but can drive to the hoop sometimes. He is prone to make awful decisions.

He is an excellent defender when he wants to be, and has the versatility to defend nearly any position except the 5. The biggest thing he brought to the Boilers was probably rebounding, which will be missed against any bigger teams (don't know a lot about VCU, but from looking at KenPom it seems that the Rams lack both height and rebounding).

In his absence, frosh Terone Johnson got some time at the 1 last night and looked very good...it's his natural position, but he's been mostly at the 2 all year long. TJ has a pretty good jumper, makes good decisions, and defends fairly well, but still needs development beyond that.

I don't think Barlow's loss will make much of an impact at all against VCU.

Nobody runs the press as a base defense in the B1G. When St. Peter's ran it against Purdue, they went on somehting like a 13-2 run before the Boilers stopped the bleeding.

really! now that is interesting. maybe you can pass such knowledgable info onto the tv guys. better yet keep it to this board where solid basketball conversation is held daily. maybe Jay Bilass can log on and learn.

I still want more. Somehow these wins have been good but I want more. Can't explain it. We just aren't done yet.

Looking at box scores it looks like Perdue was only going about 7 deep WITH Barlow. Let's run them out of the gym!
