I think it is his biggest win at VCU. Some others are Oklahoma, St. Louis for the CBI win, UCLA at the Garden. What does Ramnation think?

This was a road victory over our biggest rival, that sets us up for a possible game next Thursday for the out right leed in the CAA!

yes....winning in norfolk is very difficult...a win against you most heated rival on his court...best win IMO

Re: Is this the bigest of Shaka's 42 wins

Shaka was smiling when he did the pre-game hand shake. He knew what was coming. His most satisfying win IMO. GREAT GAME RAMS, GREAT TEAM WORK!!!

Re: Is this the bigest of Shaka's 42 wins

For "us", this win ranks up there among his best, but from a national level, it would be the UCLA win in the Garden. I had family and friends outside Va. asking me about VCU.

Re: Is this the bigest of Shaka's 42 wins

I'd say the top 5 are:

1. November 21, 2009 - #17 Oklahoma at VCU
2. November 26, 2010 - UCLA vs. VCU at Madison Square Garden
3. January 22, 2011 - VCU at ODU
4. December 12, 2009 - Richmond at VCU
5. March 31, 2010 - VCU at Saint Louis

Also considered...

November 16, 2010 - VCU at Wake Forest

However, Houston Baptist probably could have beaten Wake Forest at the time but it was a nice to get a win against the Wake Forest basketball program.

Agreed word for word.

Re: Is this the bigest of Shaka's 42 wins

It's one of the biggest. However, I thought all along that we'd win. Felt very good about the game. ODU's a one dimensional team and Smart did a great job of neutralizing their strength and exploiting their weaknesses. And, of course, the players came up big.

We've been playing good defense, taking care of the ball and not taking as many bad shots as we were earlier in the year. Coming along nicely. Oh, and Skeen was clearly the best big man on the floor. Wonder how his career would have gone if he had been here all four years.

Now, no let down at Towson. Put 'em away early.

Might be your biggest misspelled word of the week. Joking aside, I absolutely agree that this is Shaka's biggest win to date.

Re: Is this the bigest of Shaka's 42 wins

I'll vote "biggest win" for Shaka. In the context of this season, where this team has been (down and almost out) and without rozzell, at ODU, with a history of road struggles ... man, so many reasons to be happy with this W.
Shaka made some great moves too, as mentioned in this thread. Putting the big boys in to battle Hassel paid off. And I saw a concerted effort to attack ODU's three point specialist, Iliadis, when he was defending Nixon. But maybe Nixon was just playing aggressively.
Biggest win for Shaka because I believe he finally has Joey's head on straight. Watching Rodriguez this year has been a case of mounting frustration has he has forced shots, forced drives, turned the ball over and generally shown little leadership for a senior. But yesterday showed how valuable he could be. Instead of yelling, "Nooooooooooooooo, Joey!" I found myself saying, "Great pass!"
I still say he is the key to us winning the CAA tourney. If he plays in control and with smarts, the team is so much better, and I'm not big Joey fan. I reluctantly admit that as a fan who has hoped Theus would grow to dominate the PG role.
So many reasons to be fired up about yesterday's win. But back to topic: I vote this as Smart's biggest win. The UCLA and Oklahoma wins were early season wins when teams are still trying to figure things out. This win comes after the Rams have been good, bad and then ugly and needed to show some character.

Re: Is this the bigest of Shaka's 42 wins

I will say it is second behind UCLA only because the scope of how UCLA happend (ESPN, NIT, MSG etc)

Re: Is this the bigest of Shaka's 42 wins

"biggest" is very open to interpretation here... in a very shallow/surface PR way, I think UCLA, and perhaps the Sooners, were bigger from a purely notoriety standpoint, but their impact is, and will be, rather fleeting. Yesterday's win may be less widely important, but it goes much deeper because of its importance to the fanbases, the impact (both current and potential future) on league standings, and to the forging of team confidence and identity.

Re: Is this the bigest of Shaka's 42 wins

Without a doubt, the UCLA win was his biggest. That win, combined with the showing against Tennessee, proved that VCU's program was legit and VCU could play with the big boys. VCU got a ton of national exposure through ESPN/NIT and is a game the coaching staff can always point to when recruiting anywhere in the country. That can't be said for the ODU game. I would also list the Oklahoma win ahead of the ODU win for the same reason. When you go into a recruit's home and tell that recruit the VCU beat Oklahoma last year and UCLA this year, you are going to have that recruit's attention. Yes, a recruit committing to a mid-major wants to beat the ODU's and Mason's, but they also want to play/beat the big boys when given the opportunity.

100% agree. That OK game just rocked. UCLA win was a very close second.

I honestly had no expectation of beating ODU yesterday - they are a very good team who seems to have hit a tough patch. I think Blaine will turn them around - but some of the damamge has been done.

Great job to Shaka and the VCU coaching staff - we were 100% prepared for this game.

They are all big wins but for different reasons. For example, Wake Forest was a big win because it got us to Madison Square Garden. Saint Louis was a big win because it let us end a "less than a stellar " year on a high note. ODU's game yesterday was big for many reasons! Put all the big wins together and you have a solid basketball program.
