ISU Forward Laron Denby (6'9", 225) is a native of South Carolina who is leaving his school after averaging about 7.3 ppp (on 60% fg shooting) and 3.6 rpg, 1.3 blocks. Was a top 100 (63) coming out of HS.

Only has one year left for eligibility.

Is that one year after he sits out? If he hasn't been redshirted yet that would be the ideal way to secure that one year of playing time. I think he would be a good use of scholarship for one year, just to get another big for a year. He has the talent (top 100 recruit) to make it in the CAA on physical tools alone so I say we should give it a shot if he wants to be closer to home, I think we would be an ideal fit.

Our staff has some background with him. He was originally committed to Clemson when our guys were over there but didn't qualify and ended up going JUCO. He's a bit of a risk because of academics so we'll likely pass on him although you never do know for sure.

I say pass. Only one year left...and after sitting out a year he will be rusty and likely take half the season to even be a contributor. Look at Skeen.....really came on in the final 3rd of season but was on/off the first 2/3's of the season. I'm not sure we would get much out of a one year player IMO.

The issue with skeen IMO was more of not wanting to disrupt team chemistry. I think he always played great and took more control of games when he wasn't playing alongside larry. When Larry was put into the game Skeen acted like he just wanted to give the entire spotlight to him. I didn't know academics were an issue so that would be a good reason to pass on him, however, I think that getting a player of this caliber for one season could be beneficial to a young team like we will have next year.

I agree with your thoughts on Skeen. He was simply deferring to Larry. I actually think we might have been better off playing through Skeen and letting Larry play off of him. They seemed to really hit their stride during the CBI and Larry was able to get a nice passing game going between him and Skeen. Jamie seems to be more comfortable on the low block and banging in the post whereas Larry liked to move without the ball and score in transition. Hindsight is 20-20, but it seems like Larry wasn't really ready to be the star of the team. Skeen could have helped shoulder that load a bit. Between that, being a transfer and getting used to a new team and surroundings, and getting back into game shape, that was probably too much to ask. We still have another year of Skeen, and if the CBI is any indication, it looks like he's ready to be the man in the frontcourt. He really impressed in that last game on the road at Chaifetz Arena.

Skeen has incredible quickness with his drop step in the low post and when he faces up. I think he could be the leading scorer this year, or at least in the top 2.

“LaRon and I met yesterday and he informed me of his intentions to transfer to another school,” Hoiberg said. “He explained to me this was something he has been considering for quite some time. We will do everything we can to help LaRon in his future goals.”

“He basically came into coach (Hoiberg)’s office this morning and said his mind was made up,” Cyclones assistant coach T.J. Otzelberger said this afternoon. “(He said) he’s had it on his mind for a while and he’s known of it and kind of kept to himself and said it was in his best interests to transfer.”

Did he say why?

“He really didn’t. He was very short and said he kind of had his mind made up, and that was it.”

Gotta believe he already knows where he's going.

It certainly sounds like it from what you found there 'Chill. He's from Greenville, SC. Perhaps he's giving Darrin Horn at South Carolina a call?

Interesting to note the assistant who recruited him to Iowa State is TJ Otzelberger, the lone coach retained by new Head Coach Fred Hoiberg after Greg McDermott left for Creighton. TJ also was the lead recruiter for Darrell Haley when they offered him earlier this season.

Baller, let's all face it Larry was a star in the waiting. However, he was misused. Larry was never an offensive star. He could score sure. However, he wasn't dominant on the offensive end of the floor. You are correct. Skeen or someone else should have been the offensive focus with Larry playing off them.

If Larry had focused on his strengths, and advantages in the CAA VCU might have been unbeatable or close in the league. Larry should have focused on being a Ben Wallace type with more offensive. He should have been told to get every rebound, contest every shot and focus on shutting his man down. He should have been benched the first time he launched that first darned 3 pointer. He could have done this and IMHO he would have been better off for it. Instead, we all wanted/demanded an ESPN type of offensive player instead of a dominant player. The problem is most people think that being a star means scoring a ton of points,it doesn't. I think the pressure to be an offensive player, which he wasn't at the time, hurt Larry's development overall.

A nice exchange of information/analysis interrupted by yet another sarcastic and completely worthless post by Ramdog. Rammad's post is worthy of discussion, not derision.

Dog.........spare us your BS and provide some worthwhile content (information/analysis) or shut the piehole entirely. Memo to you: You are not funny, you are not interesting, you are not relevant/topical. You provide little, if any, information/analysis, EVER. You're becoming Heywood-lite.

Rammad/Baller..........continue.

rammad- i agree with you. people do focus way too much on the ppg aspect of hoops and not enough on how a player can affect a game in different ways. while i wouldn't go so far as to say larry was necessarily misused, i do think too much was expected from him offensively.

that said, i'm not so sure there were better options at the start of last season. skeen wasn't playing yet, burgess was tentative, and our shooting guards were fairly inconsistent. i'm not so sure there was much choice but to run the offense through larry, even though he didn't look to be quite ready for that to happen.
