Chalk one more verbal commit up for the class of 2011 as Scout.com is reporting that Jernard Jarreau, 6-10 PF from Lousiana, has verbally committed to Romar and the Dawgs over VCU.

It was just a matter of time now that we stopped recruiting him after filling our scholarships. Good luck to him. In all honesty I'm pretty sure he would have chosen Washington had we stuck with him anyway. His AAU coach wanted him to go high-major all along. We'll see how his career goes over there. I can't help but think of GJ Vilarino and Jon Mandeldove though. For the kid's sake I hope he does much better.

I wouldn't be surprised if Shaka or any other coach we had hasn't tried to make a last ditch effort in that situation

Yeah I don't know that this doesn't happen everywhere. I was initially upset admittedly when he decommitted. In hindsight, if the kid wanted to go to the 'highest level' possible I can't blame him. It's his life and if that's important to him, than good for him.

Maybe because we got one of our top guys (besides Jarreau) anyway I'm not as ticked, but I do really wish him the best. He's the kind of guy that is a big risk going to a high major just because it's all potential and he would have a lot more time to grow and come along before being recruited over like he would at a major conference school. Larry Sanders comes to mind immediately, and this kid is even skinnier than Larry was. I can't see any scenario where he doesn't redshirt there. He really needs to bulk up. If he was going to here, he definitely needs to there going against PAC-10 bigs.

I'm confused....we still have one scholly left for that class, correct? Are you saying it makes sense we've backed off JJ since he gave UW a verbal and we have our other targeted schollys? Or are you suggesting we backed off becasue we've made a different offer to someone else we believe is on board so there's no sense in continuing to pursue JJ? If the later, when will it go public [or have I missed]? We have so many moving parts with recruiting I don't always stay updated.

PS
I too was upset with JJ's waffling, but wish him the best. I'm more upset because while UW and Pac is outstanding I actually believe for his situation/needs [development] VCU was a better fit....but I do wish him much success.

We don't have anymore scholarships available for 2011 and that's why we stopped recruiting Jarreau. He had told Washington fan sites that he was down to VCU and Washington and that he would choose next week. He declared yesterday for a reason.

It will probably go public in the next week or so. It's done though and the commitment has been in for a while now.

This was a case of having 2 players we really liked and whoever committed first got the scholly. Jarreau committed first, but the new commit got a second chance when Jarreau opened it up and jumped on it. It was potential vs. productivity. We got a guy who can play immediately and put up nice numbers this past season. Jarreau has the potential to be better in the future and was a good prospect, but he's nowhere near as good right now. This commit should help us immediately.

I think when it's announced you guys will agree that we ended up just fine.

See the 'Did Jarreau really commit to VCU?' thread...it's all there.

Thank you--this now makes perfect sense. I wasn't keeping up with all the threads--I'm thread challenged apparently. Looking forward to hearing upcoming news.

DB:

What are we going to do when you end up leaving VCU? We will no longer have any sources.... :(

Thanks for all of the info...

it could very well mean the end of the world as we know it. i'm not sure how any of us will survive. i just hope there's a ledge big enough for all of us....

Two words. Sugar Phil.

There will always be someone (or several persons) with information on this board.

I hope he gets his degree with a 4.0. As for basketball, I hope he stinks it up.

I agree with VRam - hope he amounts to squat playing ball, and I knew even at age 17 what my word meant to others and me. Age is no excuse unless you are about 7 or 8. Anyone defending a 17 year olds actions mustn't have much integrity themselves.
