That clears up a bit of the confusion regarding why we were still recruiting. Jay Gavin has decided to leave the VCU program after not being able to work out his differences of opinion with Coach Smart. Good luck to Jay in his future endeavors.

good luck to Jay, but that only partially clears up the recruiting question considering if we count Jay, TJ and KP that is 3 scholarships that are leaving and we have already had three scholarships accepted for next year in Reco McCarter, Rob Brandenberg and Toby Veal. The fact we are still recruiting is either insurance/knowledge on Larry or the potential of someone else leaving because to this point we have no scholarships to give.

Sorry that Jay's tenure here didnt work out as we all had hoped, but wish him the best on wherever he chooses to go next.

Wow!!!! He can transfer twice with losing eligibility?

If he goes to a D2 school

Correct he can go to a D2 school next season and play right away. If he transfers to another D1, he will lose a year. As of right now Jay doesn't know where he will end up. His main concerns were playing time as he was being buried on the bench even after the Towson game. Once he saw he wasn't getting time after his 14 point outburst he decided to move on to a place where he can be better used. He is leaving on good terms with all his teammates at VCU and it was cordial parting with Coach Smart as well. He wishes VCU all the best and wants us to win the CAA and go as far as we can. I personally want to wish Jay Gavin the best of luck in whatever he chooses to pursue from here on out.

Thanks Jay! If you want to reconsider being a VCU grad, we understand. If not, best of luck!

That's too bad. I would have liked to have see Jay continue with the team. Thought he could have developed nicely into a consistent player over the next 2 1/2 years. I think with additional time and experience he would have seen additional minutes with his sharp shooting ability. I certainly wish Jay the best. I hope he finds a program that he will fit well with and sees the kind of playing time he expects. Good luck Jay. Thanks for your help with our wins earlier this year and your constributions to VCU basketball. Wishing him well.

Questions:

1) will there be an official announcement?
2) will he leave immediately or ride out the remainder of the season?

Not sure why he wouldn't just play out the season, be super supportive of his teammates and make his move after the season. Is there any benefit to making this move now versus waiting a month?

If this is true his options are limited, either play D2 for two years, lose another year of eligibility and play his senior season at a D1 school, or I guess he could go D2 for his junior season and transfer for to D1 for his senior year.

When you transfer lateral or up you have to sit a year. Transfering down is the only one that does not cost you a year.

That's not true. You play immediately transferring up from D2.

For example, Toby Veal would be immediately eligible to play for us next season after playing D2 this season. Calvin Roland transferred from D2 and play the next season for us.

Not sure I understand the timing. Announcing it on your Facebook page on the eve of one of the biggest games of the season - I just hope it doesn't effect the rest of the team.

Good luck to him though.

From JC to D1 yes. From D2 to D1 it will cost you a year. Veal is coming from a JC.

It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out, as Chill asked when will he leave and has it been made official.

No reason to leave now. He could be part of a CAA Championship (get a ring), win the CAA Tourney, and make a trip to the NCAA's.

But if he does leave I could see a scenario where he would transfer to VUU or VAST. Both good D2 BBall programs that are local, assuming they have room for him.

From what I have heard from some of the guys inside the program it is understood that Larry will not be retuning next year. Wishful thinking from the fans, including myself, does not change what is already known inside the program.

I also wish Jay the best. I was still rooting for him. His displeasure was apparent by his attitude he so openly displayed on the court.

I was hoping he would turn it on after Towson and get some PT but I guess not. Sucks this story had to end this way.
