Random baseless post of the evening...

But I still mean it when I say....Jay Gavin is going to go on a tear through the CAA this year. That guy is on a mission...

I hear he is having a difficult time dealing with the loss of his mother...and who can blame him. Hopefully he can find a way to turn it into motivation. I have a feeling we will see something special from him in the next few years.

It's incredibly sad. I'm not sure I even have the right to talk about/mention it.

Either way, I got his back...really rootin for the guy. I think he's gonna do great things here at VCU.

Natty - - what are you specifically seeing? Not doubting it, but what have you seen/heard that makes you feel this way about Jay? Just looking for some info. We have so much experienced talent this year and not everyone can be a star scorer...my top 3 scorers going in would have to be Sanders, Skeen and Burgess. After that maybe JRod (depends on the PT he gets and at what position), Rozzell or Gavin. I guess I just didn't see Gavin as being able to break into the top 3 scorers this year. Maybe we'll be surprised though.

I'll be very surprised if he isn't one of our top three scorers. I suspect he'll be #1 or #2, depending on Larry. Look at what he did (and against what teams) for Marist coming off the bench as a freshman. He had some big games. He's a scorer.

A few things worry me about Marist. The conference was not that good. The talent on the team he played on was not as good as it is here (making him stand out more). He doesn't have exceptional height, athleticism or ball-handling and was reputed to have a difficult time creating his own shot. He wasn't as much a scorer as he was a shooter - - there can be a difference. I think we'll have to wait and see on him obviously. I hope he does great for us!

His conference wasn't that good I don't even know which one it was lol but some of his best games were against the best teams on the schedule

Both solid points; but transfers are a bit like finding new gym shoes - no matter how flashy they look on display, you never know quite how they'll fit until you've got them on your own feet. Will you run like the wind? Or get blisters?

Remember Matt Coward? At VMI, the little guard averaged 12 points a game (with high output versus Virginia Tech) as a sophomore, but showed no ability to score whatsoever once he became a Ram and was confronted with consistently bigger, stronger, faster opposition.

Based solely on last fall's intrasquad game, I suspect Gavin can add some pizzazz ... my question is how does the Marist transfer match up against junior Brandon Rozzell? It would seem they will be in a tug-o-war for court time, and it would seem fair that Rozzell, based on incumbency, should be granted the early nod.

2008 Gavin Points vs BCS & C-USA Non Conference Games
Miami - 19
Houston - 16
St. John's - 15

2008 Conference RPI
CAA - 13
MAAC - 17

Gavin Points vs 2008 Top MAAC Teams
Siena (23-11, RPI 66) - 19, 15
Rider (23-11, RPI 109) - 21, 21

I've only seen Gavin play once in a scrimmage game, but based on that small sample he looks like a more pure shooter than Rozzell. Brandon "may" bring other things to the table but I'm pretty confident Gavin is the better pure shooter.

While I agree with the overall sentiment, I think it's unfair not to mention that he was likely not being asked to attempt to score. His role seemed to be to basically just run the point without turning over the ball when Maynor needed rest.

Are you guys sure it was his mother? From what I understand the reason for him transfering is because his father was really ill and could no longer travel the distance to Marist. :?:

I still say with him we wouldn't have gotten past Drexel in the CAA tourney in 2007. Coward knew his role and played it. like sometimes said he wasn't on the court to score.

and also have you seen a VMI game? Everybody puts up points based on the type of offense they run

I talked to his father at the VCU games last year...he looked healthy to me.
