I hope this helps anyone out there who needs it.
When Obama signed the economic stimulus package back in '09'. He funded the workforce reinvestment act, which makes federal grant money available to displaced workers to retrained/enhance their skills for new jobs(It's $ 3500). The funds are granted through the Virginia Employment Commision and its skillsource centers).
If you are currently on unemployment; you are eligible for the re-training funds.
Steps to take:
1. Go to http://www.vec.virginia.gov/vecportal/f ... ffices.cfm and find the nearest office to you.
2. Once you select an office, tell the front office person that you are interested in the Workforce Reinvestment Act to get enhance your training; they will schedule for an orientation which you need to go to. the front office contact is going give you a list of things to bring to the orientation.
3. Go to the orientation with necessary documentation and get registered for WIA.
4. Once you are register for WIA, the WIA Coordinator will schedule you take a skills assessment test (general applied math, reading etc). Once you pass the tests, you qualify for the funds. You choose how you want to use the funds and select an authorized training organization from there list and start getting retrained.
