I did not see the game last night, but did watch the video. Is Joey doing better physically? He seemed to be moving well and kept up with the flow of the game. Just wondering.

He looked healthy to me, but it didn't look like his heart was there. He needs to go back to being the Joey Rodriguez that played against UNC-Greensboro (minus the bum ankle).

Joey of last year. Don't get me wrong, I'm stoked that he hit that three at the end. But as I told my wife at the time while screaming at the TV, it was not the best shot there and he had been missing all night. We are fortunate he made it, but not a good shot at the time. I would have preferred us to penetrate or take a shot with some more separation than that.

I think it was the best look he had all night. Brandon penetrated to the basket, made an amazing but dangerous pass to a ready and waiting Joey. Joey got the shot off really quickly, if not he would have gotten blocked. He buried that clutch shot. Way better than him taking crazy shots from deep like he had been all year. Props to JROD. He stepped up when we needed him.

He looks to be getting better as far as the injury is concerned. Mentally I really like the way he has adapted. He shoots less and is more of a manager. I still hate seeing him trying to get to the basket though. He gets blocked or can't pass back out too often. Overall I think his game is coming back. Good thing for our team.

Rammed,

Sometimes a shot like Joey took is the best shot. He took and made a similar (meaning not a great shot but one we sorely needed that went in) one against Wofford as well. The team has taken good shots at the end of games and the results haven't been what we wanted. See USF and UAB.

We have all been screaming about leadership and someone stepping. Just the fact that Joey had the courage to take a shot like that is one step in the right direction. Let's be thankful that the ball bounced our way and hopefully that shot leads to others like it albeit better choices next game. Think about it he also hit four straight free throws after that to seal the game. Maybe Joey will be the leader we all believe this team needs.

With that having been said, my concern with Joeys play hasn't been his scoring. I see the drop in his game on the floor leadership side of things. We have scorers, and can survive and not so perfect shooting Joey. However, he has to improve the number of steals he gets as well as his assists to lasts years level. I think those to stats are the biggest determinate of his health and play.

I love Joey, this team is better with Joey on it. But I am concerned that he often tries to do way more than he is physically capable. He gets caught in the paint playing defense way too often and teams abuse him there. Also, if he attempts to take that all to the rack with 3 defenders in the paint again and it ends in a horrible circus shot, steal, travel or any other sort of turnover I'm going to scream. Joey is at his best running the offense and taking advantage of of our guys that put themselves in good position to put the ball in the hoop. I prefer that he let offensive opportunities come to him kick outs and mid range jumpers with separation. That shot was huge last night and I'm happy it fell, but when he put it up I rolled my eyes, only because he hasn't been shooting well. Hopefully this gives him some confidence though. Because Joey can get unconscious out there and it's a thing of beauty when it happens.

Dear Joey,

No more driving to the lane.

Love,

YBR

He had to take that shot. Can't pass up a wide open three in that situation.

He has to try and get into the lane on occasion, but he has to do it when there's an opening. He can't force it. In addition, he has to be looking to pass first and guys have to be aware and move to get the ball. You can't have a point guard who never penetrates and you can't have guys standing around hoping they'll get an open jump shot all the time.

I agree... it there are openings by all means take it to the hope. But Joey is not physically gifted enough to create opportunities in situations where there are 3 defenders in the lane. Bradford, Ed, Brandon, Darius and Rob ARE. He needs to do a better job on recognizing when he should and when he shouldn't.

After reviewing tape of his shot last night, I'm not as angry as I initially was. It was a kick out and he had good separation. Still not my favorite shot at the time, but he drilled it and I'll give him props where props are due.

He has taken some pretty questionable shots in an effort to force things when he has been frustrated with his performance, but this was far from a bad shot. You state that you would have preferred us to penetrate? The very shot you are questioning was there as a result of penetration! B-Rozz went inside, every single Dragon out there (including Bruiser  ) collapsed on him in the paint, and he dished it out to Joey for that WIDE OPEN and with his FEET SQUARED UP TO THE BASKET. I'm pretty sure Joey shoots about 99.99999% in that situation! Great play, great shot, and great clutch performance from Brandon and Joey in the last 2 minutes.

I'm just not going as far as to say that Brandon is a great defender who never lets his struggling shooting allow him to take plays off defensively. ;)

I did, you said you still weren't a fan of the shot.....how come??

Plus the comments (according to Rob in the post game interview) show both Ed and Joey starting to step up vocally. We need that as much as we need the shooting.

Want to be THE man? Then BE the MAN.

I loved Joey huddling the guys up last night... he certainly seemed more vocal. We need that from him.

I agree. We need leadership in action and words!
