Don't you think that the statement below on the Spider board about one of their greats is a racist statement?

"I don't see John being comfortable coaching in our system. It's not the way he knows to play basketball. I could see him at VCU or Virginia Union or Virginia State."

Maybe, maybe not. I can certainly see how it could be interpreted that way, but just seeing that one statement, out of its context, it's hard to tell for sure. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if that was the spirit in which it was made, but then again, from a distance, I'll give 'em the benefit of the doubt.

...and frankly, I'd rather not go over to their board and soak my sweater in woolite just to get a clearer picture

John wants to coach. He is 42 years old, no experience in coaching, even high school or rec league. Reminds me of another Spider great (cannot remember his name), was head coach at George State. UR would not give him the time of day.

Apparently he wants to start off as a college head coach. Might be better to work his way up the coaching ladder a little bit.

You would figure a guy with his pedigree wouldn't presume to angle for a D-1 coaching job with zero experience....gotta pay your dues and earn the right to teach and lead these young men.

By the way, how do they figure that he wouldn't fit into their system? If I recall correctly he was once in their system and was the best player they ever had. Go figure.

I went to Spider Nation and read the original. I am not sure what the writer had in mind. I saw Virginia Union and Virginia State play in the Coliseum recently in the Freedom Classic and I don't see the relationship with VCU. Frankly, If I were a Spider fan, I wouldn't make such a remark about one of the best players to play at UofR.

UR alumnus, Kenny Atkinson, is now an assistant with the New York Knicks.

He had some of his best games against us, unfortunately.

State just fired their men's basketball coach and promoted their tennis coach ( ) to men's basketball coach, so I could understand them needing a hand, but not VCU or Union.

I understand why the coach at Virginia State got fired. At the Union game, it looked as if he stop coaching during the second half. Now, moving the tennis coach over to the basketball coach raises big questions. I don't know if it's the A.D. or the president, or budget, but something doesn't seem right. They could use someone like Newman. Pretty good band, however.
