the juco point guard that we have been in touch with is now considering JMU. It looks like we have backed off a little bit. I guess with grayson in the picture now, the coaches have focused their attention elsewhere. this young man is also being recruited by cincy and depaul. He would sign with vcu tomorrow if the coaches offered. he could easily solve our point guard issue for the next 2 years...i would say he may stay avaiable for another week or so...hopefully the grayson thing will play out by then !

If they think Grayson will be that much better than this guy we better hope we land Grayson

I agree but i have serious concerns about graysons academic situation. FIndlay Prep is one of those "basketball factory" schools like Mt. Zion, Oak Hill, etc...i heard that the kid has to go to school all summer in order to be able to graduate. by then, if he doesn't make it, NO ONE will be left for us to give the scholarship to. rivals still has him listed as a 2010 recruit...i have my reservations about this one...

FIndlay gives a new definition to basketball factory school. Every player on the team is every student in the school and vice versa. So there is a total of about 10 students in the school. Wonder what summer school is like for a place like that?

Frankly, I'm embarassed we are recruiting from a school like this, I do not care how good the kid is as a player or person. If he had to go to a place like this to graduate, we should be looking elsewhere. This school is the crux of what is wrong with the recruiting process. JMO.

Agreed. A couple of my boys from back home, Tristan Thompson and Cory Joseph attend there too and they said the place is a joke academics-wise. They are used to a lot more workload back home. It's a hoops factory and that's it. They try to get you qualified with your SATs/ACTs and class is pretty much an afterthought for the most part.

FWIW, I tried to put in a good word for VCU with Cory, (Tristan's already committed to Texas and one of the top 5 players in the 2010 class) but he's blown up a ton and is leaning towards UCONN now. His brother Devoe (plays for Minnesota now) was considering VCU but didn't want to play in "Maynor's shadow". He's playing spot minutes now and he's hearing it from me. That's what happens with a lot of these guys who are enamored with the 'name' schools. Cory looks to be better than Devoe was though and should be a 5-star by the end of the year. I'm still in his ear about VCU every now and then.

wavevcu and DB - which direction would you go? Grayson or the JUCO recruit?

Even though MistaChill didn't ask me specifically...I totally agree with Ramathon. There are a thousand red flags with this guy, and if he's undisciplined in the classroom (if they even HAVE one at Findlay)...it stands to reason there may be character/work ethic issues that will manifest themselves in a D-1 setting. I know we're not William and Mary, but there has to be a standard of expectation before you even get there. Not sayin' the kid doesn't deserve a chance....but I'd rather it not be VCU.
Whomever the JUCO is...He certainly took the road less traveled and definately challenged himself to take a step down from D-1 and totally leave his comfort zone to make a better situation for himself down the road...That's a kid I'd rather take a chance with (even if it is only for 2 years).

Also, it may be better for the balance of classes and schollies to have a JUCO so another scholarship is free in 2011-12 when Shaka is even MORE entreanched as the head coach and maybe more able to land a highly regarded recruit.

I haven't actually seen the JUCO play at all, so I can't speak to him. Grayson is very athletic and a very good playmaker. That said, we need a point guard now, and we don't really want to wait a year if 2010 comes around. If it comes to waiting a year, we can probably get a comparable or better point guard with less academic baggage if we wait anyway. When it comes to talent-level, I'd probably give the nod to Grayson, but the JUCO is more steady and has size at 6'3, 175. I would go with the JUCO recruit just for stability. That said, I don't see Shaka wanting to take the JUCO.

Did you know that before Findlay could open as a school in Neveada, they had to agree to never accept a kid from Nevada as a student? Nevada did not want its students attending the school, that has to tell you something about the caliber of its education.

Just by recruiting and signing these players, we are condoning their existence as legitimate schools.

Sorry, this is obviously ticking me off.

I understand the JUCO kid even asked if VCU would sign him, if he agreed to redshirt a year - not knowing we actually need him next season, not in a year. Kinda feel sorry for kid who did things the right way.

We need to trust our Coaching staff to offer to the best recruit that can help our program w/out our speculation. On paper both the JUCO kid, and Grayson look good. It would be nice to have a name w/ this JUCO prospect w/ a statiscal profile. I appreciate that they are taking their time in getting us what we need in the long run, not a quick fix. I personally think Rozell has the ability to become a decent PG if need be; he will not be a Maynor nor will any other recruit we get immediately. We have became spoiled w/ Maynor and now will have to make a significant transistion w/ out him.

Gotta agree with Ramathon on this one, the JUCO kid could wind up missing on a big east offer waiting for us while we are going around with this kid from a basketball high school

Even if Grayson comes here to visit and says yes to our offer, then he has to complete his class work to graduate and that is not until the end of the summer. What if he doesn't pass, then we have no one at all as a true PG. Of course, at his school it may be a foregone conclusion that he will pass. But he could be one of those kids that says F-this and just decides to enjoy his summer without any more school work and we get screwed over. And I guess we assume he has already passed his SAT test or this would be a moot point to attend summer school.

OK I'm done on this. I'll trust our coaching staff for now.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush (unless the bush belongs to Amy Winehouse). I say take the JUCO. He wants to come, would fill the need, and is ready to sign. I fear that we will mess around with Grayson, he will qualify, then dump us for a low-level Big East school. Meanwhile the JUCO signs elsewhere and we are left with nut'n.

That's pretty bad seeing as that Nevada is considered the 49th dumbest state in the nation.
