“Without even hesitating I’d have to say role acceptance on the part of the players,†Stevens said. “We’ve always attempted to create a family atmosphere among our guys as opposed to being just a team. Plus 9 of our 11 guys from this group were on the 16’s team that lost in the title game last year so there was a hunger thing going on too because they’d been so close last year and felt that sting of not winning.â€
One player that might have epitomized that attitude was Julian Debose, a rising senior (2011 class) guard out of St. John’s in D.C. While Duke-bound Michael Gbinije might get the most attention and players like James Robinson and Mikael Hopkins get a lot of press as uncommitted stars being highly recruited, Debose took a spotlight role of his own this summer taking on the assignment of guarding some of the elite guards in the nation. In high-profile contests Debose was matched up with Marquise Teague, Austin Rivers and Brad Beal and his impact was not lost on his coach.
“We’ve been fortunate in our program to have a big-time defender every year and Julian filled that spot to a tee for us,†said Stevens. “Austin and Bradley are great players and they got their numbers but Austin shot 8-25 and Bradley shot 7-26 so Julian did a great job on them and they had to take a lot of shots to get their 25 points or so.â€
Debose is a 6-foot-4 guard who took advantage of his own offensive opportunites to score points himself this summer. He showed a quick first step and his athleticism was effective in transition and he can knock down the three-pointer as well. While holding Teague to single digits in scoring during the Peach Jam semifinals, Debose scored 18 points himself in the 72-57 win. While he is not as well known as several of his teammates his recruitment is picking up according to Stevens.
“DePaul, VCU, Charlotte, Delaware, Rice and Towson have all offered him at this point,†said Stevens. “He’s a 6′4 lock-down defender — schools need those guys in a big way.â€
