When Bishop Loughlin dropped the CHSAA Class AA intersectional final to Christ the King in March, it was an end for many of the Lions. For Kareem Canty, it was just the beginning.
It meant the start of the AAU season, when he could prove his detractors wrong.
His college prospects counted on a big spring and summer. But that wasn’t his motivation, not entirely anyway. Every time he went online, visited a recruiting Web site, local or national, his blood boiled, upset at all the local players slotted ahead of him, kids he’d outplayed.
“When I would look at rankings,†he said, “it would get me mad.â€
That anger has turned into glee, even if Canty is still not a household names to the Scout.com’s of the world.
College coaches have taken notice of the talented 6-foot-1 combo guard. He has six offers – from George Mason, Iona, Hofstra, Marist, St. Peter’s and Wagner College. High-major schools such as Iowa State, Seton Hall and Providence have also taken a look, along with mid-majors Massachussetts, Quinnipiac and Virginia Commonwealth.
