Kyle Whelliston of MidMajority.com has been doing the Top Mid-Major Legacy Countdown for the last couple of months releasing the top 100 mid-majors over the last 6 years going down from 100-1 to help the preseason pass by. Well VCU finally came up at #5, tops in the CAA for it's performance over the last 6 years. Whelliston put together a mathematical formula to quantify each teams success:

* NCAA Tournament victories - 5
* NCAA Tournament appearances - 5
* Conference regular season titles - 4
* Red Line Upsets - 4
* NIT victories - 3
* Leading conference in offensive or defensive efficiency - 3
* 20-win seasons - 3
* NIT appearances - 2
* Individual statistical leaders in conference (PPG or RPG) - 2
* NBA Draft picks - 2
* Other postseason appearances (CBI, CIT) - 1

It's pretty neat to see VCU so high on this list. Other notables include Nevada (4, split with them home and home the last 2 seasons), ODU (6), Winthrop (10, we play them this year), Dayton (13), George Mason (16), Siena (17), Temple (19), Creighton (20), Richmond (55). We're in pretty good company.

Here is the complete list: http://www.midmajority.com/tmm100

An impressive "nine-year run" we've had............2002-2010.

It's too bad (for us) that Kyle didn't extend his study out one more year (back thru 2004). We won the CAA tourney in 2004, danced, and had Dom Jones (CAA POY).

I think we're seeing the results of two good decisions..............building the on-campus Siegel Center and hiring young, energetic head coaches (partially the result of Villa 7).

I believe this is the year that we really start to see the hard work that the players,coaches, and the administration has put in over the last 10 years pay off. We will see the increased national attention that is needed to take the progrm to the next level.
I do not know when it has been a better time to be a RAM FAN. If there was, please let me know. GO RAMS!!!!

1985 was a great year. I remember it vividly. But it did not have a lasting effect. It was based basically around Coach J.D. When he left, it took another 15 years to begin building a solid tradition similar to the early '80's. Today we have a much stronger athletic department. Students are more involved today; we have the Siegel Center. Fans are giving more money. The staff of the athletic office is top notch. Publications are of a high quality. Today everything is in place for a better future. I was proud to be a Ram Fan in 1985; I am more proud to be a Ram Fan today. I truly believe, however, the best is yet to come.

that's just how many points you get for each win.

My boring recurring theme how does VCU become the next Gonzaga. I thought it interesting that this guy removed Gonzaga, Memphis and one other from the calculation (so VCU is the 8th best MM). It shows that the WAC has not hurt Gonzaga, and I hope we are using them as a model to continue the building of our success.

Gonzaga is not in the WAC, they are in the West Coast Conference.
