Larry The best VCU Post Player ever? Give me a break! On the one hand we talk about his only playing five years on the other we talk about his being the best ever. The latter statement is disrespectful to Ren Watson, Schegal, Sherron Mills, and Kendrick Warren. All who would have given it to Larry night in and night out.

Larry does have the most NBA potential ever and as to that GMU game in last years championship. He probably should have had a bout thirty points as he missed several point blank layup attempts.

Will say this however when he plays within his game set he is unbeatable in the CAA. He needs work on post moves, footwork, and yes defense. His offense has improved this year. However, teams routinely drive the ball straight at him. Fans have said he needs an enforcer. Hey Skaka, use Kiril and Santil as enforcers!

Larry The best VCU Post Player ever? Give me a break!

who are you even talking to?

i don't recall anyone stating that sanders was the best vcu big man ever. if they did and i missed it, i apologize.

ramnation very confusing that past couple of days.

If this were'n't a 'dis Larry thread' it would be an interesting discussion. There have been some extremely good post players to come thru this program. But, their tenure would be prior to most of the current posters' romper room years

Someone in another thread today said Larry was the best player big man ever. This doesn't deserve a thread though.

Glad you said it. I am sitting in the corner right now- in time-out. I have to be nice to the newbies for a little while. So I won't comment. But I'll throw out a few bigs, with my grades, for discussion. JMO's

1- Wren Watson (A) Shot blocking machine, and poised like no other.
2- Sherron Mills (A-) Unlimited ceiling. If he had a killer instinct, would still be an NBA all-star
3- Mike Schlegel (A) Could have been an absolutely dominating P/F.... but forced to play center
4- Kendrick Warren (A) A+ if he could have nailed some more free-throws, & maybe added a little range
5- Super-Nard' Harris (A) I do not remember him- going by endless stories... guy must have been great
6- Bernard Hopkins (A) A dominating, old-school type, true post-player- a Bill Russell type
7- George Byrd (B-) A very solid collegiate center. Man was he a wide body, and a good shot blocker
8- LF Licholitov (B) - One more year at VCU, and he's an A. 36" vertical.... at 6'11" - 265. Wow. Just wow!
9- Martin Henlan (C+) Solid rebounder, and BIG. Really big. Stayed at home. Got 21 boards vs Indiana
0- Antoine Ford (D) A HUGE recruit out of NY. Went to GA Tech & transfered. Did not have good career
1- Neil Wake (C+) Worked his butt off. Great defender. Robert Dickerson came in to score for him
2- Penny Elliott (A-) Would have been the ultimate college star. Could not get along with JD, & split
3- Randy corker (B) What was he? 6'4" maybe. But man could he clog the middle. He had TONS of moxy
4- Freddie brown (B+) Another 6'4" guy, and started as the P/F. Holy Moses could he jump. Great as a SR
5- Mylo Brooks (C-) Another of Sonny's transfers, tons of athletic talent, and skill. But he just didn't do it
6- Will Fameni (B) Injuries hurt him, he only had (1) full year. A really solid 5, but was really a (4)
7- Matt Treadwell (B-) Treadwell was interesting. Coming on, foot injuries never let him get there
8- Bobby Reddish (C) Enormous body. Cut like Grand Canyon. Just an average player though
9- Craig Uhle (C) On that same team. Lots of heart. Not much talent. He helped us some
0- John Thompson (A-) Fantastic player. Sure wish we had him(4) yrs, Transfer from NC-St. RIPPED!
1- John Smith (C) Absolutely freakin huge. How could you get around him? Real tough inside. Solid sub
2- Troy Godwin (A-) What a player. another under-height but HUGE body. Excellent player for the RAMS
3- Marlo Talley (B+) Really came on late JR year, excellent SR. Another of Sonny's JUCOs. Versatile
4- Bruce Pettway (C-) Another huge, and massively ripped cat. So much so that he was not mobile
5- Alvin Robinson (C) Left after 2 years. Was coming around, may have been OK... but left
6- Ivan Chappell (B) Played with Talley, Smith, Byrd. Awkward, but silently really hurt teams. Clutch
7- Kenny Jones (C) Turned out to be a solid back-up center. Had a big body, and nice height. Shot-blckr
8- Kenny Stancell (B+) Had all the tools. Everything. NBA body. Should have been an A+ but....
9- Robert Dickerson (C+) See Neil Wake. Neil played the tough D & rebounded. Dickerson came in for O
0- Greg McCray (B) Fantastic block-out, old-school defender & rebounder. Would score some when called
1- Eugene Kissourine (C+)- The big Russian was starting to come on.... then he left. He had skills
2- Constantine "Stan" Pepeliev (D) - 7'2" + Russian just didn't have it. Not his fault though
3- Dennis Orlov (D-) Same deal. A 7-Footer Russian that just didn't have what American ball takes
4- Constantine Nesterov (B-) This big-bodied Russian was also coming on. Could have been a factor, split
5- Lou Bryant (C-) One of the sadder stories of the Polio era. Forced to leave school. Way out of shape
6- Calvin Roland (B) Maybe could have gotten to (A) stage, JUCO development, and bad injury
7- Michael Anderson (C+) A wing player, playing the (4) his entire VCU career. Did a lot of good... but...
8- Nick George (A-) Great player. Period. Was really a big, strong 3, but played (4) yrs at the 4-spot
9- Marc Davis (C+) Or was it Marc Jones?? Left after 2yrs w/Mac, to Temple, then NBA 2 or 3 yrs??
0- Shawn Hampton (C) Always seemed to be coming on. Never made it. Left Mac for Rutgers. Disap.
1- Reggie Okosa (C+) Same deal as with Hampton. Came in together.... left together. Reggie to LaSalle

* Anyway, those are some thoughts on the "Bigs" subject. There are a bunch more, but these are the guys that come to mind.

Dang Life! Yeah, those are 2 good ones. Slim would get the (D) just for being a pretty likable kid. And ED would definitely have to get the big fat E. Can you give an E- !!!!

Nice catch. Thanks. Like I said..... I am missing a bunch. But these guys came into my mind, as I typed.

Good list, nice trip down memory lane. A few guys I hadn't even heard of! In your opinion, was there a class of big men in our history that was a bigger disappointment in terms of what they seemed capable of vs. what they actually produced than Hampton/Okosa?

Pretty surprised that Orlov didn't earn an F!

I was at VCU during Ren's last two years and I'm one of the biggest Ren Watson fans there is (still have a program with Ren on the cover), but I'd have to give the edge to Larry. Ren was a great shot blocker and defender, but he didn't have near the offensive skills, athleticism or quickness that Larry has. He was a great player. For those who don't know about him, he was 6'9 and only about 190 pounds. His lack of bulk and limited offensive skills ruled out an NBA career. Lucky for him there weren't any message boards back then, because he would have been crucified his first two years (we lost a lot of games), but we only lost a total of nine games his last two seasons so we probably would have had a lot of people jump on the bandwagon.

As far as the centers I've seen, I'd rate them Larry, Ren, Kenny Stancell. Sherron Mills really came on during the second half of his senior season when Kendrick got injured and was out for the year, but his career wasn't as good as the other three.

My top 5
1.Supernard Harris best shooting big man ever, not bad rebounder or defender despite being skinny.
2. Mike Schelegal a battler nice jump shot, inside moves, passer and all around player.
3. Larry Sanders loads of potential basically new to basketball
4.Ren Watson best defensive center and rebounder, not afraid to mix it up, struggled offensively.
5. Kenny Stancil beast on the boards w/ good all around play especially his senior year. Remember him destryoing ODU at the Scope one year.
