Congratulations to Larry Sanders on repeating as Defensive Player of the Year in 2009-2010 as well as garnering 1st team All-CAA honors two years in a row.

In other news, Hofstra's Charles Jenkins won Player of the Year (boo-hoo Gerald Lee), Tony Shaver was Coach of the Year (no surprise there), and Drexel's Chris Fouch won Rookie of the Year (no surprise there either).

Charles was definitely deserving of the crown. Fouch earned ROTY IMO also. Way to go Larry on the DPOY! The committee did excellent this year sans Ed Nixon first team All Defense.

VCUAthletics has put up their press release on the All-CAA accolades for Larry and Joey:

On Larry:
Sanders became the only the second player ever to capture back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year awards, ranking third in the conference and 24th in the nation with 67 blocked shots. He is also second in the conference in rebounding with 8.9 rebounds per game. In less than three seasons, Sanders has moved up to fourth on the CAA’s all-time blocked shots list with 254. He grabbed double-digit rebounds 12 times this season and is four rebounds shy of 700 for his career.

“The thing about Larry’s defense is that it can’t all be measured on the stat sheet,” Head Coach Shaka Smart said. “When he is focused, he can disrupt so many shots and force the opposition into a stagnant offense, which ultimately buys time for our guards to try and force a turnover.”

Along with his defensive abilities, Sanders led the scoring attack with 14.8 points per outing, recording double-digits in 22 of his 27 games. He also ranked second in the conference in field-goal percentage with a 54.9% clip.

“Larry had some tremendous offensive performances this year,” Smart added. “His approach is so important because when he comes with the energy and determination that he possesses, he’s tough for anybody to stop.”

On Joey:
Maybe the heart and soul of this year’s squad can be found in Rodriguez’s 5-10, 175-pound body. The hard-nosed, gritty leader of the Black & Gold led the conference and ranked in the top-10 in the country in assists (6.0 apg) and steals (1.9 spg). In addition, he averaged 12.0 points per game, including five 20-plus point performances.

“I really can’t say enough about the way Joey has played this year,” Smart said. “We knew coming into the year that with Eric leaving the point guard spot would be a focal point and Joey has been outstanding. To have him develop not only as a player, but a leader the way he has, it’s been vital for us.”

Congrats to Larry. As I believe Art previously pointed out, he's clearly improved every year. This year he gave us pretty much what I expected he would.

Yeah you got to commend him for that. Despite all the naysayers who said he wouldn't be anything without Eric Maynor, he's improved his stats across the board. Props to him on that. Unfortunately we dropped from 1st to 5th from last season to this season, but this weekend will go a long way towards helping us forget that if we can pull off what has never been done and win the CAA as a 5-seed.

congrats to Joey and Larry. Joey went from not returning to having a great year. Larry is just plain fun to watch. Everyone has good days and bad days and we have to remember that sometimes.BUt I can remember many a year where we didnt have the post player that Larry is.
Man it would be sweet if he comes back.
Jenkins as POY is due IMO to his late season heriocs and the resulting 6 game HU win streak. He is good but there could be about 5 of those awards to pass around...but none for Mr Softee

At least the league respects the Joey. Congrats! I knew all along that Joey was the most important player on the team given every teams need for a good pg. Joey really stepped up when many thought he couldnt. This is an important selection for our guys.

As to Larry first team all league is very much deserving.
