Larry Sanders Declares for NBA Draft

Like his teammate Eric Maynor a year ago, VCU's Larry Sanders could be a nice find for a team in the mid-to-late first round. He's also a guy the Pistons reportedly like.

As we've seen with Rodney Stuckey and Austin Daye, Joe Dumars is not afraid to use first round picks on guys who played at smaller colleges. In fact, Stuckey, in particular, has been one of his most successful draft picks and Daye certainly showed that he has some upside in the minutes he did get last season. Sanders, an athletic post player, could certainly be in that mold.

Patrick Hayes from the Flint Journal thinks Dumars may look at Sanders and in the comments section says he's been a VCU fan ever since Maynor wore that championship belt last year.

With the Pistons picking a 7 though, it's a pretty big stretch that the Pistons will take him unless they trade back. I'm not sure you can justify taking Sanders over players like Cole Aldrich, Hassan Whiteside or Ekpe Udoh.

Didn't they draft Darko with the #2 pick between Lebron and Melo?

Correct, and from there Ernesto went on to become a starding middle guard at Appalachian State.

Currently, the strongman coaches the Powhatan track team that features state high-jump champ Shawn Minor.

I'm glad to see Powhatan High made this forum! I graduated from there in 2009. Ernie Henderson was a pure beast. And if Shawn Minor was a few inches taller, he could be a starter for the Rams no doubt. I have seen every high school basketball game he's played and he doesn't look like a 5'8" (actually 5'6.5") kid when he's on the court. The man dunks like there's no tomorrow. Knocks down 3's like Ray Allen and dishes it like Nash. I believe he's going to Lynchburg next year for basketball. Had offer from James Madison for football. Yes, He was a starting quarterback at 5'8".

Yeah but Darko was always a consensus top 5 pick and Detroit picking them was well within his expected range. No one has Sanders in the top 10. His ceiling is at the end of the lottery from all the media so far. It would be a pretty big story if Larry went ahead of a bunch of frankly more deserving and talented players. I see Larry as going in the last 3rd of the first round and possible the late teens if a team like the Bulls or Celtics fall in love with him. I also think there is a distinct possibility Larry might fall to the top of the 2nd round since this draft is SO deep with a lot of talented players.

Sanders is one of the “under the radar” picks for the Jazz. He is predicted by several sites to go 12-16, but the Jazz aren’t too far off that range at 9.

Offense: Still very raw at this end of the court and will get most of his opportunities off of open lay-ups, dunks and tips. Shoots a very good percentage because he stays close to the rim. Has amazing size (6-11 with a 9-4 standing reach) that will allow him to play power forward and center. His sprint speeds were also good which means that he will get some opportunities in transition. Needs to develope his back-to-the-basket game and jump shot. Has a nice little hook-shot and fall-away shot close to the hoop.

This Utah Jazz blog has a short profile on Larry and speculates about the possibility of Utah taking Larry with the 9th pick. That's a stretch to me too, I'd think they take Udoh, Davis, or Aldrich there.
