Larry Sanders Declares for NBA Draft

Larry I will miss you. Some might disagree but as a team WE will miss you. Who is going to guard the in bounds guy now?

Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to 7-foot tall Darrell Haley Jr. out of Palmdale, California!

hog wash...he is 6' 11 3/4" and he doesn't have that wingspan. Honestly I always thought I would hate being the guy throwing the ball in against Larry.

Imagine those people who had to pass against Thabeet and Zoubek?

Good Luck Larry!!

No one else in the NCAA had a guy with a 7'7 wingspan, and they defended inbounders just fine. Trust me, that's the last thing we'll miss about Larry. People attacking the basket now will be our concern. All those guys who would see Larry in the lane and stop and turn around are gonna go straight at the rim now.

db, I was sort of kidding about the whole inbounds thing. But you are right the thing we are really going to miss is his defensive presence. I love Skeen but he doesn't scare people away from the lane like Larry. I sort of expect Dj to be Larry like freshman year. Get some big blocks, some away oops, but limited minutes because of foul trouble.

This is good for VCU but bad for VCU. Two guys going to the NBA from little ole mid-major VCU in two years is a very good thing for us and give us notoriety in recruiting circles I would think. But bad for us in that we lose a dominant player in the paint and will now be down to just a single VCU experienced low post guy going into next year.

But all the best Larry. I really am glad you decided to come to VCU. You made VCU basketball fun over the last three years! Wish you much success in the NBA.

Make VCU proud!

Well I asked a guy who had seen DJ play and this is what he had to say about his game:

He is a pretty good player, I have seen him a few times, tall and somewhat skinny but he has potential. He is one of the top big men in the Inland Empire, though somewhat of a weak class. He did play very well against Khalil Kelley a post going to U of Pacific(Big West)21 pts and 12 boards. He didn't play many actual bigs this year. But he is decently skilled, can use either hand, is sometimes invisible but defensively he can block shots. I can see him being a role player and maybe a starter for the next few years for you guys(VCU).

Sounds a bit like Larry but not with the insane length that Larry has.

Have to admit...I'm kinda surprised by this. I'm not too happy about it, but I wish him the best regardless. Thanks for the memories, Larry. Especially the ones involving Gerald Lee which end in Lee being photographed with the "Crap, he did it to me AGAIN" face.

For example...

Good luck, Larry! Thanks for the kind remarks about VCU. You deserve the very best for yourself and for your mother. She must be really proud of you. We will follow your path wherever you go. May it be long and prosperous.

Good luck Larry, thanks for the memories. We will ALWAYS remember you here in a very positive manner. We also will attentively follow your career.

Graduate this May. You will always be part of VCU and we of you. God bless.

So does anyone feel like we could actually get better in the paint. Here me out on this.

Saintil was awful offensively and barely played anyway...not to mention there was always some drama with him.

KP didn't play much at all this year, was slow and again, limited offensively.

Sanders, while freakishly long, got most of this points off of dunks, but he couldn't create offense. And for a 6-11 guy with a 7-7 wingspan 9 rebounds is not outstanding. He didn't assert himself on D this year either.

In Skeen we've retained our most stilled post scorer and probably our best rebounder frankly...he didn't play the minutes Sanders did either. He should be a 15 ppg and 8 rpg guy next year. If Veal is even decent he will be a better offensive threat than either Saintil or KP. Not to mention we have interchangeable bigs coming in with Reddic and Haley. We'll be young inside, but we'll have experienced guards. We just need to get scoring from Skeen and Veal and let the young bigs bang on D and pick up some 'bounds. No need to freak out...although ODU is declaring us unable to match up with them now. Glad they enjoyed their 1 championship that they are due every 5-6 years.
