Larry Sanders Declares for NBA Draft

How many JCs have we had since over the past 10 or so years? Josh Clark, Calvin Roland, Alex Harper, Antoine Willie, Troy Godwin. Really all of them to a concern extent made an immediate impact.

In my opinion one of the advantages of JCs versus freshmen is that they're usually in a better position to make an immediate impact. So I disagree with the premise offered about having to wait on JCs.

Not too many years back Bernard Hopkins was a JC transfer, I think. He wasn't half bad :)

Clearly the strength of next year's team will be the perimeter.............six fairly proven and experienced commodities (J-Rod, Rozz, Nix, Burg, Daniels, Theus) and two hopefuls (Rob, Reco). Plenty of size, perimeter marksmenship, slashing, quicks, experience, and handle amongst this group.

With senior Skeen as your go-to-guy in the paint, all Veal, Haley, and Reddic need to do is rebound and defend. Any scoring we get from them will be gravy!

Rams should be CAA favorites along with GMU and ODU..............as it normally is on an annual basis now.

Good luck LS. Will be looking for you in the boxscores and watching whenever you are on.
Also looking forward to next years story and photos of you and EM showing off your new rides on campus to the new recruits. :)

Horn, didn't you ask the same question about Kirill during his first year? Remember speculating about how unhappy he must be coming all the way from Russia and only getting limited minutes? Didn't he end up staying his full three years of eligibility and (according to him) had an enjoyable stay at VCU?

And why would Grayson return as the third string point guard with little hope of playing until 2011-12 ... and why, why, why would Hinton make a return voyage as a "veteran" walk-on? And what about Shaka?

At the end of last season he also speculated (rather adamantly) that Hinton would not return for his sophomore year.

No offense to Hinton, but if you don't play then the team doesn't lose anything. How many minutes did he get the last two years in a mop up role? Not many.

Regarding next year, I think we will be fine. Coach Smart's style of play with full court pressure is more dependent upon guard play and forward play. The bench will still be deep next year. Also, sometimes the team, as a team, becomes a better team when you lose someone like Larry. UVA's best year was the year after Ralph Sampson left UVA. The key to next year will be team chemistry and Joey's leadership.

did we get better when Eric left?

Sampson was a big man. Sanders was a big man. Centers don't touch the ball nearly as much as a point guard. Losing a good center will not impact you as much as losing a good point guard. Also, Eric was a leader on the floor and played a big part in team chemistry. Larry did not.

Here's what I said regarding Hinton:

Without recalling every syllable, I suggested you would have to "question the sanity" of an athlete returning for a second year of walk-on status with virtually no chance for quality minutes. That is, assuming the athlete has options. One year as a D-1 walk-on makes sense as a stepping stone to a more suitable destination; anything beyond that carves into precious eligibility.

And Chill, what comparison are you asking of me? Pish played more than 305 minutes as a sophomore - often when it counted - and saw a clear frontcourt vacancy with the departures of Anderson and Fameni.

Hinton has played 27 mop-up minutes in two seasons. Grayson played 43 minutes this season - rarely with verdict in doubt - and has no reason to expect higher status in 2010-11 with return of Rodriquez, Rozzell, Theus, and with more Smart recruits en route and on the drawing board.

Hinton might consider transferring to Virginia Union where he could play three years, starting next season. Both Hinton and VUU coach Willard Coker are alumni of R.J. Reynolds High, Winston-Salem, N.C. If he likes, I'll put in a good word for him.

Since it appears Hinton has time on his hands and not going anywhere, maybe he should start a blog like the Club Trillion blog that Mark Titus has sharing his experiences as an Ohio State walk-on. :) That blog has had over 2.9 million visitors since November 3, 2008.

Here's the link: http://clubtrillion.blogspot.com/

It's an awesome blog.

Larry what are you doing declaring for the draft? Why would you listen to all those NBA scouts that say you are going to get drafted in the first round? Do you think they do that for a living or something? Why wouldn't you listen to all the posters on a forum, they know a lot more about basketball.

Horn, you're the one who made the statement at that time openly questioning KP's happiness here and indirectly insinuating he may not want to stay. At the time you said nothing about the prospects of future playing time.

Of course everyone wants to play, but my point is you can't automatically assume somebody is unhappy because of their minutes. Perhaps Grayson realized (and accepts) he's behind the guys getting minutes and he knows what he has to do to get on the court more in his sophomore year.

And remember, Theus has been described as a "combo guard" so he may not exclusively play his minutes at the point.

FYI, Shuler only played 126 minutes as a freshman and had BA in front of him only one class year ahead of him.

That suggestion has already been floated. Don't be surprised if it happens. Hard to beat clubtrillion, however.

Go get 'em Larry.

Everybody else is gonna have to step up EVERY night. We need to replace 15, 9 and 3 every night.
