-This ties in with what today's list is about, but with Blake Griffin and Tyler Hansbrough now in the NBA, who's the best player in college basketball? I was blanking on it, so I went to NBADraft.net to see how the projected draft looks for 2010 and get an idea of who the best players are - wow. Pretty unimpressive group, though obviously I'm not familiar with everybody on there, especially the freshmen.

I do remember reading an SI.com story a few months ago in which - if I remember correctly - scouts were praising Georgetown big man Greg Monroe. I wonder if he becomes this year's Griffin-esque player.

Two guys I like a lot on NBADraft.net's list - VCU's Larry Sanders (blocks everything) and UConn's Stanley Robinson (reminded me of a poor man's Shawn Marion).

And ODU fans were already fed up with the Larry Sander's "hype"?

Now what will they think, especially when Larry wins preseason POY over Lee.

I hope they do give preseason POY to Lee. That makes it all that much sweeter in March when they hand the trophy over to Larry. Plus, I want Larry to be focused this year and on a mission. I don't want all of this hype going to his head.

Isn't the preseason stuff done by polling the coaches? I think they'll give it to Lee.

I agree that it would be sweet to have that happen. But ODU will still be delusional and claim Lee got robbed or would've won it if he didn't hurt his elbow. Heck, on their board one of their fans said following about Maynor: "I still dont think he was much better than Drew W., but he probably was a little better."

Words can't describe that one.

"Maynor or Williamson? Only an idiot would make that comparison...oh wait, one did. "

"Eric Maynor goes his entire career without cutting down a net, then let's compare those STATS."

In the highly unlikely event Large Larry suits up four seasons, it will present a dilemma for Rams' record-book pencil pushers.

The long-stemmed junior from Fort Pierce, Fla., has 187 blocked shots as a freshman/sophomore.

Ren Watson, the "Ren-aissance Man," holds the Black 'n' Gold career record with 391 - but it was a "career" in which he is not credited for any blocks as a freshman.

Blocked shots were not tabulated until Watson's sophomore seson, 76-77. Watson's whopping total was based on just 79 games as a sophomore, junior, senior.

As a Ram freshman under coach Chuck Noe, Watson (who led Buckingham to the State Group A title as a senior) averaged 19.6 minutes per game (averaging 6.2 pts, 7.5 rebs). It is reasonable to assume he had at least 50 blocks in the brief 25-game slate.

Add half-a-hundred to Watson's cart (making 441) and it's unlikely even the towering, intimidating Sanders could run him down, even with more than 120 career games.

With 391 the bench mark, four seasons of Sanders could make for an interesting, statistical changing of the guard, just as the Maynor/Creech career points controversy popped up last winter.

Unlike Creech (now disabled), Lorenza is easy to find and very chatty as a veteran campus policeman and frequent game-night security guard behind visiting team folding chairs.

I'm sure Larry would concede the VCU blocked shots record in exchange for one of those multi-million dollar NBA contracts.

Both are/were great players. Probably two of the most entertaining players to watch in Ram history. More importantly, very likeable.

Any body else notice how much press we seem to get in the NY area? Seems like I've read more than our fair share of VCU press in the NY Times these last 4 years. I wonder if we will ever make use of this press, and start recruiting in the N.E.?

That was also true from the mid-70s to about the mid-80s. Then it dried up.

Doesn't this guy realize that we don't read his posts and that his writing is horrible? Not surprising he's stuck at a newspaper like the RTD.

darn Sometimes, that was harsh. I actually enjoyed reading that post.

Yeah, I found it very informative. The style of writing is a little formal for a message board and the story telling style makes his posts a little longer than others, but any post that contains information that I did not know or something thought provoking is a good one in my eyes. I feel like this record is going to be safe as it currently stands even IF Larry were to stay for 4 years. Given horns numbers of 391 blocks in 79 games that is a per game avg of nearly 5 blocks. I don't see that avg ever being matched by another Ram even in a single season. If Larry does stay for his Sr. year right after the "Thank You" thread someone will have to start a thread tracking his points, rebounds, blocks, etc. as he makes his way up the charts.
