Larry Sanders

Yes, it's my first year of watching basketball. Not sure what you saw in him last night that would make you think he's even close to NBA ready. He doesn't fight for position in the blocks at all and fades away on every shot unless its a dunk.

I'd agree that TJ has the best post skills.... if he were in Larry or even Terrance's body he'd be unstoppable. But alas he isn't so we really can't call him our best post player. Now if we could get him iso'd down low with someone his size a la Andre Miller, I'd like those chances greatly.

Bout time the guys learned to pass the ball inside to the big man on a regular basis

helped us win at the end

If one of ya'll want to grab him by the collar that is fine with me, but I am not going to be the one to do it. Larry is doing a great job and so is the rest of the team. I don't think he is concerned with the NBA in the way that some of the people on here think.

Larry Sanders does not warrant a thread like this. Here's the only stat you need: VCU's won/loss record this year with Larry starting in the paint.

btw it's 6-2. Game, set, match.

I dont think anyone needs to "grab Larry by the collar" and tell him a thing. The Larry bashing by some on these boards continues to be a real head-scratcher to me.

Larry does alot of things very well. I do wish he would establish low post a little more so we can have good inside outside spacing and passing but thats just nit picking.

I hate to be a "waffler" and agree on both sides, but I guess I will. No one asked, but here's my 2 cents worth:

Larry is fantastic. Best center in the CAA- no question about it, and he changes every game he's in. I love his game, and man are we lucky to have him. And I think he is having a fine season, after starting a little slow, maybe over the first 2 games. Seems he does that every year, and then gets everything flowing. But IMO, he's a fantastic player, and he's having a good year to help propel us.

Now, with all that being said, I'll also agree with some of the others- just with less fire. I think Larry has some weapons that he has been developing, and I don't mind him using all the gifts he has, to do some of the things he is capable of. I don't mind a couple 3's a game- if he's wide open out there. And I agree with Ramdog and others, that he creates mis-matches all over the court, spreads D's out, clears the lane, etc. Any knowledgeable fan can see some of those things.

But I've also heard a few folks say he changed the ball game on Sat night, with those "extras" that he was doing- especially in the second half. Well guess what? What he did in the second half had NOTHING to do with any of the "extras." What he did was get back to basics, put himself AROUND the basket, and just flat out beat the Spiders inside the lane. He killed them during the final 15 minutes, and it was all around the basket. So I don't mind him doing a little bit of the other "stuff" that he's been doing. He's certainly proven to everyone that he can, in fact, shoot the ball. And he does clear out the lane for Nixon, Brad, and our guards. But those things, to me, should be reserved for a few select occasions, and he only proved last night, without a shadow of a doubt, that no one will stop him when he moves around the lane. No one. And that's where I believe he should be for 85-90% of the time he's in the game. I also realize, of course, some of the half-court movement, where Larry is concerned, doesn't start in the lane. It ends there. A' la' Sheron Mills. And I am fine with that too. But he needs to be scoring down there- at will. JMO

Hard to believe, isn't it.

I don't think it's bashing to tell him not to take a 3 and get in the paint. His 3 point offense won't win us the CAA and certainly won't get him drafted. That's not bashing, that's basketball knowledge.

I'm just chuckling at the mental image of posters on this board trying to grab Larry by the coller, not being able to reach that high, and then crumpling as he gets swatted away by the land lord like his name is Spider.

Larry attempting 1 or 2 shots from beyond the arc during a game is not detrimental to us as a team whether he makes them or not. For one thing it keeps his defender honest so that he is not sloughing off Larry and sagging into the paint. No the 3 point shot is not a major part of Larry's arsenal at this point, but Larry is skilled enough, athleticlly gifted enough and a hard enough worker that it could be. Don't discount it.

I do think Larry needs to think about his 3's a little more. When we are ahead by 2 possessions, yeah he can afford to take a few. But when it's close or we are losing, he needs to go for his bread and butter: getting inside and maybe picking up a foul.

That being said: Larry is an amazing player. And not just the way he plays, but his presence on the court. When Larry took the court after that timeout at the Oklahoma game and encouraged the crowd to get up, they did and it got LOUD real fast. And you know how fired up we get when Joey throws up the alley-oop for Larry. I am really glad to have Larry on the team and I hope the sports medicine dept keeps him healthy for February, we will need him!
