Legalization of Marijuana?

I am willing to entertain the idea if it can be manufactured, controlled, and taxed the same way we do tobacco products. The same age requirements, marketing restrictions and etc. I am sure VCU would be happy to help Phillip Morris with the research.

In fact we can start thinking of some brand name suggestions for them. :mrgreen:
 
I am not 100% on the details but there is legislature in front of a few states to legalize, control by government, and tax.

From what I hear California and Maine maybe????

It would be like VA's ABC stores. Controlled and sold only by the state with limits and taxes.

As for age requirements they should similar to alcohol not cigarettes, because while less severe than alcohol there is impairment that you should be 21. Same DUI rules should apply also.

I think the jobs and taxes would be a great boost to the economy right now. Not to mention that it is ridiculous for it to be illegal to begin with.

I've heard that Phillip Morris has the rights to many popular names of weed and that they would be able to very quickly start producing a product the day the stuff becomes legal. I'm not gonna go check any of what i just said because I should be studying, but I've known a few people who worked there the last couple years and they have all mentioned it. It makes sense though, I think it's pretty logical that one day it will become a multi-billion legal business instead of a a multi-billion illegal business.

I guess it's just the Liberal in me, but I don't really care what people do in their own time.

Though if we as a country can turn it into a billion dollar business, then why not. Think of all the problems would be solved by legalizing it. Less drug dealing, crime, etc.
 
It would certainly be one heck of a boost to the Richmond economy. Imagine how many people would walk into the MABC and pick up a pack of Phillip Morris King Buds.

Moreover, Marijuana being illegal has very little to do with the act of getting high.

The strongest lobbyist against pot are big timber (paper companies that would loss everything if we used hemp products) and big alcohol that assumes people would drink less if they could get high instead.

Also the kingpins of the black-market would see the street value drop close to 70% if it were legal.

Also I love that "Sticky Icky" made it, but I can't believe that "Nuggets" didn't make that list.
 
Given that the trend has been toward outlawing tobacco, I seriously doubt a different type of smoking will gain much ground (especially given the above mentioned lobbyist blocks against it). That said, more moves toward decriminalizing wouldn't be too shocking. The difference being legalizing would actually encourage it's use, whereas decriminalizing would just be aimed at taking some of the war-on-drugs stress/cost off law enforcement and corrections.


And btw, ya can't copyright just a name, and in the U.S. trademarks actually have to be used with a product or service (or at least within 3 years of filing with a good faith intent to use) to be granted protection... you can't really just make up a bunch names and bank them all for an open-ended period just hoping to use them on a just-in-case basis.
