A few things I would like to see from the coaching staff. I do not agree with the fire Shaka after one year talk, and we should be willing to see what improvments happen between now and this time next year. Here are my two cents (and that's what it is worth)

1-Skeen to be more aggressive and assert himself (especially if larry is gone). When he gets the ball at the highpost/fouline sometimes he is wide open and doesn't realize it until the defense collapses. I would like to see the staff urging him to get 10-15 shots a game.

2- If Larry returns, teach him to roll to the basket, not to the baseline for a fade away jumper.

3-Work on Theus's jump shot. If he is going to be our pg after joey, he is going to have to improve his shooting much like Joey did this year.

4-Don't just press to press. If a team has good ball handlers and keeps beating you for open layups, get out of it

5-When we play teams with good post players (like yesterday) play more zone, and make teams beat you from the outside

6-If Troy Daniels is the best shooter on the team, let's find him some shots

2010-2011

I expect us to win the conference, win the tournament, and win at least one NCAA game. Larry or not, anything less will be underachieving. If Smart is Smart he can do the coaching.

However, with Skeen, Rodgiguez, Rozzell, Nixon, all being Seniors and Brad being a Junior and a three year starter. We cannot tolerate any excuses.

One caveat, if Larry returns, I expect to make it to the sweet 16. Meaning we must win two tournament games.

The talent is there we must simply use it.

If Larry decides to leave then I'm not sure we will even win 20 games next year. He is our main shooter (high scorer) this year and main rebounder. We could lose our inside game next year if someone doesn't step up.

Our post players for next year (if Larry leaves) would consist of Skeen and Santil. Plus who knows if both will be staying. Based on our incoming guys for the fall, we will likely lose a player we yet don't know about.

1. Maybe but I think we'll do well without him. Be more of a team at least.

2. Yeah Skeen and Saintil but we're also adding some big freshmen. Sure it'll be tougher but don't just say we will only have 2 big men.

If Larry leaves then he would be that player that we lose. We are only 1 over at this point.

long time reader, first time poster

in terms of players, i would love to see brad become a go to player, either #1 or #2 on the team in terms of scoring and shots taken with either skeen or sanders if he stays being the other

as much as i love joey for his heart and his hardwork, i feel like one of our team weaknesses was not having a reliable perimeter player who we could go to once ODU started stopping the ball from getting into Larry or Skeen's hands in the post. ODU's wings were just seemed too big and strong, Nixon, Rozzell and joey as spot up shooters imo, just seem so much stonger and more comfortable than as dribble drive players and their size fits that too. brad has the size and has shown me flashes of the skill that hopefully in the offseason he can make this happen, i think theus who has shown some maynor jr in him at times, might need another season before the team can truly trust him to have this same role

w.o this i still think we a top 4 team in the CAA, will contend for the reg season title and of course be scary in the tourny, and of course our expectations are postseason play

but with big strong perimeter player and low post player we could possibly witness something even greater, i think brad can be that guy

Um what? DJ Haley and Toby Veal decommit or something? We will have four front court players including Skeen and Saintil (if Larry leaves).

Our post players for next year (if Larry leaves) would consist of Skeen and Santil.

also i think shaka will have us all smiling after next season, i think our expectations were too high due to how great grant was (reality, how many coaches anywhere are that good that fast, school record 28 wins his first season?!), capel was 18-10 his first season, i didnt arrive to vcu until 2005 so i dunno how ppl reacted then or if the talent on the team was poor, but they had 21 wins the season before he arrived, so i would guess not too bad, in fact capel only had one season with more wins than shaka just did, shaka is off to a good start

The line-up below, with minor questions to it could be awesome.....

Sanders
Grayson
Saintil
Rodriquez
Burgess
Skeen
Rozzell
Theus
Nixon
Daniels
Veal
McCarter
Brandenberg
Haley

The future is ours for the taking. I hope that everyone keeps perspective. Fans and players. Give the coach a few more yrs. 22-9...how many teams have worse records?????? (someone do the research please?)

GO RAMS

Ah yes you are correct. However, thinking that either of these guys will be a serious threat is more like a pipe dream if you ask me. Not that they won't succeed here.....just that freshman rarely do much their first year and the same can be said of transfer/JC players.

Larry won't be back unless the NBA suddenly has discovered what most of the rest of us already know...he has a loooong way to go to becoming a good basketball player.

This season's non-conference home docket was arguably the juiciest in program history - with only one bland visitor (the leadoff victim, Bethune-Cookman).

But what about the '10-'11 slate?

Richmond is away. Bracket buster will be on the road. I don't think Jeff Capel ever wants to see Richmond again. Grant's return is at least two years off. Mack McCarthy is history, and on and on.

Feeling cozy at home, VCU is 64-8 at The Stu the past five years. This year's Rams were among the most dominant home-floor squads in the land, registering 12 wins by double-digit margins. There was little in the way of late-game drama as the Rams squeezed the life out of their "guests."

The flip side of that is no one is going to want to come to Broad Street unless they are forced to (CAA foes, Bracket Buster, departed coach's contractual deals, etc.) ... or MEAC Road Kill/Other Gypsies in sneakers looking for guarantee check.

VCU's schedule maker really has his work cut out. that poor guy probably hears more phone hang-ups than a telemarketer with a thick Middle Eastern accent.

I concur with this post. With Larry back, that's a team capable of making a sweet 16 run, assuming everyone works to improve their weaknesses this summer, including the coach.

Next year has the potential to be very, very special.

We could actually get 2 extra home games out of the NIT if we don't win the Wake Forest bracket. We are guaranteed 4 games. If we don't get to new york we could get the next 2 games at home. Shaka mentioned that we will likely host a holiday tournament next year so that's 4 possible xtra home games in addition to tulane..that takes care of your non conference schedule including the already mentioned home games with UNCG and VMI.
